Visited Kee Heong bak kut teh in Taman Eng Ann, Klang this morning. The 20+ year old BKT shop really lives up to its stellar reputation as one of Klang's bak kut teh stalwarts.
Kee Heong BKT has seven outlets, including one in People's Park Centre in Singapore (which has closed).
This is Kee Heong's flagship, the original where the Kee Heong brand started. It has a nice kampung feel, and most of the customers are regulars. The staff seemed to know everyone - smiles and friendly banter filled the atmosphere.
The chunks of meat are picked out from the large pots according to customers' orders.
The chosen cut is finished with high heat just before serving.
We had a ka wan 脚弯 (rear hock) which is probably Klang folk's favourite BKT cut (unlike in Singapore where ribs is the popular cut).
The brownish broth is syrupy in texture, thick with dissolved collagen. It smells of aromatic herbs and tastes well balanced herbal-savoury-sweet. The broth is natural tasting and is highly drinkable.
The meat and fat were done just right - tender and juicy. It tastes herbal-savoury-sweet from the herbal broth and we can still taste the underlying natural porky sweetness.
It's delicious.
We also had a "dry" bak kut teh.
Oh... this is so good...
The pork with lady's fingers, dried chili pepper and dried cuttlefish were tossed in a robustly savoury spicy blended sauce.
The sauce is savoury-sweet-spicy but we can still taste the underlying natural sweetness from the tender and juicy pork.
Our total bill including rice and tea for two came to RM31.
4-Star (out of 5). Kee Heong is one of the best bak kut teh in Klang - Malaysia's BKT capital. Nicely balanced herbal-savoury-sweet flavours. Fresh, good quality pork done tenderly juicy. Well worth a trip from KL.

Ribs?
ReplyDeleteNo proud Klangite want to be caught with a bowl of spare ribs bkt.
Considered chewy and fiberous when overcooked.
Then again one man food is another man poison.
Yes yes :-D
