✍ 31 Jul 2024. Looking for breakfast in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, I decided to revisit Yong Xing kway teow soup.
The arrival of a bus load of day trippers helped me to quickly decide on this "Abalone Slice Noodle" before my order gets queued behind 100 orders 😬
The laid back atmosphere in the shoplot restaurant suddenly came alive. Yong Xing now spans two shoplots.
My order came surprisingly quick - within 5 minutes.
Payment was collected on delivery. RM20 for this.
The kway teow (my choice), lardons and fried shallot came in a pool of watery dark sauce.
The noodles were well coated with dark sauce after a good toss. Kway teow was the firm tender spongy type which I dislike. But, I like the drippy dark sauce which was a blend of savoury sweet lardy flavours. I managed to finish all the "plasticky" chewy noodles because of the sauce.
The soup was almost clear with a light yellowish tint. I like it because even though it seemed sugary sweet, I can still taste the natural porcine sweetness and fresh crustacean umami from prawn. The raw lettuce also added subtle green taste to the soup (though I don't like this).
There's a good mix of fresh and canned ingredients in the soup, all adding their own textures and flavours to the dish. There's prawn, shellfish slice, pork liver, scallop, clam, pork stomach, lean pork, and fish maw. They blended and worked well together, and the sum was tastier than the parts. Though ingredients were not super fresh, I like the soup.
The spicy sourish chili also made every thing tasted nicer.
Although this place has lost a little of its old rustic charm in expansion and the pursuit of greater efficiency, the comfort dish is still very likeable and pleasant place for a traditional breakfast or lunch in JB.

We opted for Yong Xin's signature Abalone Kway Teow RM12+ per serving.
The soup is watery but loaded with savoury sweetness, actually slightly too sweet for my liking.
Part of the sweetness came from the many ingredients in the soup - there were fresh prawn (1 only with shell on), pig stomach, fresh oyster, fish maw, pork liver and lean pork. All are cooked to just the right doneness, so they have nice texture and natural sweetness.
Yong Xin's signature tender abalone slice and other shell fish in the soup. They are all canned shellfish with slight briny flavour which gave the soup its salty savouriness.
Generic kway teow tossed in a savoury sweet sauce laced with aromatic lard. Simple and likeable.
Toss in a few of these crunchy lard cracklings and the noodles instantly raised to another level of shiokness 😃
👉 Simple and nice light meal at Yong Xin in Tun Aminah JB. Lots of "liaw" (料 ingredients) and full of savoury sweet flavours. Comfortable and clean ambiance. Reasonable pricing.
