I was invited to a private preview of Fukuzushi Japanese Restaurant 福寿司 at 163, Jalan Sutera, Taman Sentosa in Johor Bahru. I enjoyed the tasting which covered samplings from the restaurant's 300 item menu. The food was delicious and prices are reasonable. I am looking forward to Fukuzushi restaurant's official opening on 1 Oct 2017.
Fukuzushi Executive Chef Derick Wong has 28 years of experience under his belt in premium Japanese restaurants in Singapore. He worked 8 years in Chikuyotei (Mandarin Orchard), 6 years in Suntory (Delfi Orchard), and 7 years at Sushi Nogawa (Japanese Club). His mentors include renowned Japanese Masterchefs Kiyohito Harada, Kimura, and Nogawa.
Chef Derick started us off with an appetiser, E Hire (grilled shark fin - price RM16++) and Chuka Kurage (season jellyfish - RM6++). We also had hot tea and warm premium sake to warm us up 😄
Soft Shell Crab and Salmon Skin Salad with sesame and mayo sauce (price - RM30++ per individual serving).
Love the deep fried soft shell crabs, especially the roe filled ones. Every part of the crabs can be eaten, shells, legs, claws and all.
Negimak Mushi Soup (Fatty Tuna Soup - price RM18++).
I love the hot, light, aromatic, gently savoury sweet soup.
Then, Chef Derick brought out the sashimi 😄
We had fatty bluefin tuna, sea urchin, tuna belly, salmon, salmon belly, yellowtail, amberjack, white tuna etc.
The fish is fresh and what more can I say except that they taste wonderful 😄
Must try this Fuku Pizza (price RM30++).
It's a crispy rice crust topped with baked eel, salmon and prawn roe. Nice blend of savoury sweet flavours with soft and crisp textures.
Deep Fried Flounder (Karei Karaage - price RM50++).
How much did we like this Karei Karaage?
Ebi Tempura (Deep Fried Prawn Fritters - price RM18++).
Unagi Kabayaki (Grilled Eel with Teriyaki Sauce - price RM35++).
Kaki Cheese Yaki (Grilled Oyster with Cheese - price RM18++ for 3 pieces).
Hotate Mentai Yaki (Grilled Scallop with Cod Roe - price RM20++ for 3 pieces).
Salmon Spicy Maki (price RM20++ for 5 pieces). I am not a big fan of sushi because it's often made with tightly packed starchy rice. But, the sushi at Kufuzushi are really good as they use good quality pearly Japanese rice.
Salmon Mayo Nigiri (price RM4 each).
Unagi Cheese Maki (Eel rolled with cheese - price RM30 for 5 pieces). Savoury cheese and soya sauce balanced with sweet eel and Japanese rice. More flavours from egg, cucumber and "crab stick".
Beef Yanagawa (thin beef slices cooked with gobo or burdock root slices).
Ikura Cawanmushi (steamed egg custard with salmon roe - price RM10++). Piping hot soft eggy custard with savoury briny salmon roe.
House made Goma (sesame seed) ice cream dressed with sweet red bean which are soft outside but nutty inside. (Price RM10++.) Everybody loves this dessert.
👉 We enjoyed the dishes at Fukuzushi Japanese Restaurant and I would have love to rate it 4-Stars, if this was not a preview. I would love to come back to Fukuzushi, 3 months after it's opening on 1 Oct 2017 for a bona fide diner experience. I sense that this is a promising restaurant as the menu is extensive, ingredients are fresh, dishes are well executed, the food is delicious, environment is comfortable and prices are competitive.

After reading this post, I give a try to this Resturant. It was indeed a huge disappointment. The Resturant was badly ventilated, I dk why? They were using Fans indoor. Gosh, how to eat sashimi in such environment??
ReplyDeleteAnyway , there was many staff but they were all inexperienced. The food recommendated here we ordered all of them , but they were really not up to standard. I am very disappointed and hope the restaurant will strive to keep up the standards and dun disappoint their customers. The price charged is not equal to the food taste n quality. Hope my comments can allow the owner to rethink about the Resturant service n food . Good luck !
Went for dinner today. The previous western/Malay restaurant located there was reviewed by Johorkaki. The setting is nice. However some kids were running around shouting. The parents fault actually. The food is good. Give it a try and form your own personal opinion
