My Makan Place, a small shop just opened along Tanjong Katong Road in Singapore featuring Indonesia style street food like mee rebus, mee siam, mee soto ayam (chicken noodles), soto daging (beef noodles), tauhu goreng, gado gado etc.

Now they are having an opening promotion - offering their mee rebus and mee siam at just S$1 per bowl, for a limited time only.

Sharon learnt the recipes from her friend's granny in Tanjung Pinang over twenty years ago, living with them for nearly a month.

Since returning to Singapore, Sharon have been serving her mee rebus and mee siam at a kopitiam stall in Jurong, at the hawker centre in Beauty World and briefly at Jurong Country Club - some of you might have already tried her mee rebus and mee siam before.

Sharon has always love to cook for family and friends, a trait she said she took after from her father. So, deep in Sharon, her dream has always been to cook and have her guests enjoy themselves. It gives her a deep satisfaction.

So now, Sharon just opened her own restaurant, My Makan Place with her son Kiat Han as the manager. It's a dream come true for Sharon.

My Makan Place is a simply furnished, comfortable eatery along Tanjong Katong Road. I know this street well as I did my "A-levels" in Tanjong Katong Secondary in the 1970s. My Makan Place is two doors away from Eng's Noodles and is in the shop lot formerly occupied by Kay Lee roasts.

My Makan Place mee rebus S$5.90. (No GST and no service tax at MMP.)

Customers have a choice of yellow noodles, ramen, bee hoon, udon and kway teow for the dishes. I just went for the familiar yellow noodles for my mee rebus.

Sharon cooks a thick starchy stock for her mee rebus using mashed sweet potatoes, dried krill, balacan, chili and lots of spices. The thick stock is aromatic and has mild savoury, sweet, spicy flavours leaning on the savoury side.

Sharon's mee rebus has toppings of fried fish skin, ground peanuts, fish nugget, tau kuah, boiled egg and ngoh hiong.

My Makan Place mee siam S$5.90.

Sharon's mee siam stock is also relatively thick. It's main ingredients are balacan (fermented prawns), fermented soy bean, and assam. It has a mild savoury spiciness with underlying tanginess.

Sharon's mee siam is topped with fried fish skin, ground peanuts, fish nugget, tau kuah, boiled egg and ngoh hiong (same as the mee rebus).

My Makan Place Mee Soto S$5.90.

Sharon's real whole chicken stock is loaded with spices and herbs - it is flavoursome, I didn't really need the sambal kicap pedas to spice up the dish. The stock has a savoury sweetness with aromas from spices. Adding a bit of sambal kicap pedas gives the savoury sweet stock a bit of spicy balance and more kick.

For our mee soto today, we opted for ramen noodles. It didn't work for me. Though I like the al dente texture of the ramen, it just didn't seem the right match to me for mee soto - I am just old and stubborn lah.... 😛 Next time, I shall just stick to bee hoon for mee soto.

My Makan Place Beef Noodle Soup (Soto Daging) S$9.90.

Though it might seem a little pricey at S$9.90, Sharon's beef broth is loaded with natural goodness. The Australian beef short ribs give the broth a deep beefiness that is well balanced with sweetness from lots of onions, bangkuang (Chinese turnip) etc and aromatics from spices and herbs.

The beef short rib is boiled till it is soft. The juicy visceral fat and gelatinous tissues release nice beefy flavours with every bite.

I like this beef noodle soup.

My Makan Place Tauhu Goreng S$3.90.

I like the savoury sweet spicy toasty nutty peanut sauce smothering the small brick of fried tauhu. Sharon is very generous with the crushed toasted peanuts. The tauhu (fried bean curd) itself, though, was only of average quality today.

My Makan Place Gado Gado S$4.90.

An Indonesian salad of blanched vegetables and ketupat (boiled rice dumpling) blanketed with a thick sauce of crushed peanuts and spices. The delicious peanut sauce tastes savoury sweet spicy nutty and complements the crunchy juicy greens like long beans well.

My Makan Place has a few home made drinks. I had their Homemade Pear Beauty Mix which is a mildly sweet drink made with real pears and lots of other aromatic sweet things like pandan leaves. (Price S$2.90.)

  1. My Makan Place is now halal certified. You should probably update your post. I tried the mee rebus today. Delicious. I shall be back. ---Chris zzz
