This morning we had kway teow kia 果条仔 for breakfast at the old hawker centre in Taman Melodies 美樂小販中心.

The kway teow kia stall is one of the stalls at the dingy makeshift food centre in a side lane in Taman Melodies (between Jalan Kemuning and Jalan Geronggang). The stalls have been operating here in this food centre for 44 years. It is a popular breakfast place for locals who come here for chee cheong fun, mee rebus, roti canai, fried bee hoon, Sarawak kolo mee, bak kut teh, fried carrot cake, kopi and other Malaysian staples.

The 黃 couple was running a mobile street side kway teow kia stall before moving into the food centre 44 years ago. They have been here ever since.

Like many such street side stalls, this kway teow kia stall has no formal name. It used to be called Bearded kway teow kia 阿鬍果條仔 as clean shaven Mr 黃克升 used to wear a bushy beard during his younger days 😄

Mrs 黃 said she cooks her kway teow kia with the same recipe she had been using to cook for her own family. Nothing beats mum's cooking.

We started with braised pork belly, large intestines and fried tofu skin to go with our kway teow kia. Later, we added pork tongue, small intestines and more kway teow kia noodles 😄

I like the kway teow kia noodles here.

The dark savoury herbal broth leans on the salty side and the herbal taste is quite subtle. The soft, clean tasting rice noodles provided sweetness to the dish.

Oil infused with the aroma and taste of fried shallots added another layer of flavour to the delicious noodles.

I like the large intestines 大腸頭 as they are spongy tender and its gentle natural sweetness is accentuated by the savoury herbal braising stock.

The pork belly was cooked to the right doneness - the meat, fat and skin were tenderly springy with a subtle natural sweetness.

The tongue was cut into thick stripes so it was slightly stiff. It will probably be more tender if cut into thin slices. I like the slightly creamy texture of tongue after we chewed it.

The small intestines were also done a little stiff.

  1. Rude and unhygenic old lady, seen her picking up ingredients dropped on the floor and serve to unsuspecting customers.

    2. I read your blog on Facebook and am prompted to share my own experience when I saw Alex Lee's comments. I thought I should share my experience too. Let the buyer beware. Eat at their own risk. I have no ill feelings or bias, just want to share what I saw.

  2. I have been eating here since 30+ years ago. Never had to run to the toilet after eating here before. Good old school style kway tiaw kia that isn't overpowering. In fact, this stall is the gold standard for old school style kway tiaw kia for me, although I may be biased since I grew up eating this... You should also try the stomach pepper soup, it's fragrant and the pepper packs a punch!

    1. Thanks Melvin. I will try the stomach pepper soup next time. I noticed that they actually make their stomach dishes from a whole stomach instead of using pre-cut pork tripe from suppliers.

  3. This kway teow kia has been enjoyed by many generations in my family. This stall is really a hidden gem in Melodies Garden. The fact that we are still devout patrons of this stall does attest to how they have maintained their high standard throughout these 40+ years. The owners are also super friendly. 😋😋😋👍👍👍
