I joined 吃的平台 Foodie Facebook Group for their seventh annual eat together recently at Teo Orang Asli Family Restaurant (in 2017). We enjoyed ourselves at this seaside seafood restaurant handpicked by 吃的平台 group Admins (who are seasoned JB foodies) for this special occasion.

Teo Orang Asli Family Restaurant 海村海鲜餐馆 is actually the former Restoran SPOA 合德宝 under a new owner but with the same Orang Asli kitchen crew

The easiest way to come here is to use the WAZE App and punch in "Restoran SPOA" - it will take you right to this spot stress free.

Note that after exiting the Pasir Gudang Highway you will drive through a long stretch of quiet road and some bumpy dirt tracks for about 15 - 20 minutes before reaching Teo Orang Asli Family Restaurant.

When you get here, you will likely find lots of people enjoying seafood at Teo Orang Asli Family Restaurant (especially on weekends).

The little restaurant is on a wooden platform and stilts over the beach facing Pulau Ubin (Singapore) across the Straits of Johor. There is not much to see at night as the sea is dark and Pulau Ubin is pitch black.

(It is quite scenic during the day and I intend to come back for lunch.)

The frenetic action in the kitchen. As there were over 100 people who needed to be served together at the same time, most of tonight's dishes were pre-cooked. Understandably, it affected the quality of the food somewhat. I am sure that when we return next time and have our food freshly cooked on order, we will enjoy them even more.

Our opening dish was 野生龙虾炒牛油 wild caught spiny lobsters from Sungai Rengit fried with butter. The mild sweet savoury buttery flavour was nice though the meat was cold and slightly stiff as it was pre-cooked.

野生螃蟹炒辣椒 Wild caught chili crabs. I like the wild crabs caught around the Johor Straits but not so much the flavour profile of the tangy salty spicy chili sauce. (Perhaps, I will try the black pepper sauce flavour for my next visit.)

鹹蛋蘇東 Fried squid with salted egg yolk sauce. Nice eggy savoury flavour. The squid was slightly overdone today so it was rather chewy.

印尼虾配炸馒头 This Indonesian style curry prawns was my favourite dish of the evening. The wild prawns were tender crunchy and juicy sweet. The creamy curry was robustly spicy sweet savoury - quite additive really. I was literally drinking it. Must order this.

港蒸龙虎班 The live grouper fish before it was steamed. Soooo.. FRESH!

The Cantonese style steamed Grouper fish was delicious. Just doused in simple mild savoury sweet soy sauce that allowed us to taste the natural sweetness of the tender juicy white flesh. Topped with customary julienned ginger, spring onion and cilantro.

甘香啦啦 La La clams stir fried in a savoury sauce. The clams were very clean but personally I prefer my La La done in a soup or drippy sweetish sauce with a bit of aromatic rice wine 😄

泰式鸡 Fried chicken chop cut into meaty strips and dressed with a thick spicy sweet tangy Thai style sauce. By now, all of us were fully stuffed. But, this should be popular with the younger folks.

清炒菜胆 Stir fried fresh leafy greens, simply delicious.

Sambal 番薯叶 Savoury salty spicy stir fried sweet potato leaves.

招牌海鲜豆腐 Simple fried tofu cubes with a savoury spicy dip.

银鱼炒饭 Fried rice with anchovies - the customary last dish to make sure everyone leaves on a full stomach... burp 😄 I like it that the tasty fried rice was not overly greasy and separated easily into individual tender nutty grains.

👉 Even though Teo Orang Asli Family Restaurant 海村海鲜餐馆 wasn't in top form tonight, my gut tells me that this is a really good seafood place. I like the rustic kampung ambiance. I just need to come back on my own to confirm that the food is good and the price is right. I suspect my gut will be proven right 😄

Look out for my update 😄

👉 Last but definitely not least, a big Thank You to the dedicated Admin team of 吃的平台 foodie group 👏👏👏 As Admin of my own Facebook groups, I know how difficult it is to keep the group free of spam posts, comment spam and dubious "members" while encouraging genuine constructive reviews. The 吃的平台 team is doing an awesome job!

Thank you also for organising the 吃的平台 eat together every year so that foodies get to meet each other in real life at least once a year. 吃的平台 is truly a foodie group for foodies by foodies 👏👏👏
