Come to Taiwan, of course, must try Taiwan porridge 😄 Our gracious Taiwanese friend 王 brought us to her personal favourite at Shin Yeh Taiwanese Cuisine 欣葉餐廳.
Shin Yeh is a popular choice with locals. (I realised later that Shin Yeh has 9 branches in Taipei, and overseas outposts in Qingdao, Xiamen and also in Singapore 😄 This at Shuangcheng Street is the parent restaurant. )
Taiwan porridge reminds me of the solar system 😄
In the centre is a big pot of porridge like the sun. The subtly sweet rice porridge is given another layer of sweetness from sweet potatoes (which also gives it a cheerful sunny yellow colour 😄 ).
All around, revolving around the porridge, we have a seemingly infinite choice of savoury side dishes to go with the sweet rice and sweet potato gruel. At Shin Yeh, the excellent savoury side dishes complement the sweet porridge perfectly 😋
This braised pork large intestine was just marvellous.
It was very well cleaned. It felt soft spongy pillowy in the mouth and tasted deliciously sweet savoury. Very nice.
This little stewed fish was so delicious. The fish comes smothered under a heap of julienned ginger and stalks of spring onion.
The tender meat, subtle rough skin was so sweet and slightly savoury. Love this stewed fish.
Oysters with chopped spring onion and savoury dark sauce.
The savoury dark sauce masked the delicate briny flavour of the soft oysters somewhat but they were perfect when eaten with the sweet porridge.
The clams cooked in savoury dark sauce were also nice but we have to dig them out of the shells first 😂
Must order this beautifully done, spongy juicy pork liver cooked in a tasty savoury sauce and rice wine. No unpleasant odour at all, only lovely aroma and flavours. You will regret it, if you did not order this 😄
三杯雞 Three Cups Chicken, the quintessential Taiwanese chicken dish. A savoury aromatic chicken dish cooked with sesame oil, Chinese rice wine 紹興酒, and soy sauce in equal portions, hence the name "3 Cups Chicken".
Egg omelette wrapping chopped savoury sweet crunchy preserved turnip inside. One of the favourite traditional sides for eating sweet porridge.
The Taiwanese love their crunchy bamboo shoots with their unique sweet tangy flavour. I love it too and eat lots of these whenever I have the chance 😄
Some simple stir fried fresh leafy greens to complete the meal 😄
What else but mochi for dessert 😄 Nutty and sweet.
4-Stars (out of 5). Visiting Taiwan, gotta try Taiwan porridge. The best is to go where locals go and enjoy this delicious Taiwanese tradition together with them. One such place is Shin Yeh 欣葉餐廳.
(Note to self - next time must order their pork trotter 😄 )
