I had a meet up in Buona Vista this afternoon, so I took the opportunity to lunch at Holland Drive food centre, one of my favourite hawker centres in Singapore. Circling the busy hawker centre, I noticed that Ru Ji, the famous fish ball noodle stall had expanded to two stalls - side by side. The new stall serves bak chor mee. As a born and bred Singapore bak chor mee lover, I naturally chose to try it.
David, Ru Ji's boss, runs both the fish ball and bak chor mee stalls. But, he is personally manning the BCM stall. David started his BCM stall in Nov 2017. Less than 6 months, and already well received by Holland Drive regulars.
I opted for the $5 serving. There is a $4 serving with 3 pork balls, less soup and less noodles etc.
The mound of noodles is topped with fish cake slices, stewed mushroom, fried minced pork and a stalk of fresh lettuce.
I like Ru Ji's bak chor mee as its sauce is a robust blend of sambal chili, vinegar, soy sauce and lard. I like my BCM to have lots of flavours in large but balanced amounts. Ru Ji's BCM has what I like in my bak chor mee. It's just that the sambal chili lacked that little something, a certain zing to make it more memorable for me.
The bak chor (minced pork) was tender with nice natural sweetness. I also like the spongy stewed mushroom and chewy fish cake slices with subtle fish sweetness.
The signature of Ru Ji's bak chor mee is their pork balls served in a large bowl of soup.
The clear watery soup had a nice, gently sweet savoury taste. It was not greasy and I didn't detect overuse of seasoning, so it was highly drinkable. But, it's a little flat and needs a bit more depth to make it special.
There were four good sized meat balls in the soup.
The pork balls were marshmallow soft and juicy sweet from a blend of meat and fat.
👉 With Ru Ji's venture into bak chor mee, Holland Drive regulars now have one more good food stall to enjoy. For Singapore bak chor mee lovers, Ru Ji offers another good BCM. Their signature pork balls are highly likeable.
