Terengganu Curry Fish Noodles 丁加奴咖喱鱼面 was one of my first posts back in early 2012. I was "find dining" in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah (Skudai) when I stumbled upon the shop - my curiosity piqued by locals packing the little restaurant.
The 20 year old shop have since opened branches in Bukit Indah and Mount Austin, but only this parent shop in TUTA gives me the same taste and feeling of 2012.
These little fishes are at the heart of the dish. I am not sure of the species and the staff wasn't sure either. I went to supermarkets to check and these looked like Ikan Mabong to me (can you help?).
I asked the staff about the origin of the dish. He told me that his boss had brought them to Kuala Terengganu to visit the stall before but he couldn't remember its address (except that it was at the seaside). I had tried to look for it in Kuala Terengganu before but failed, and there is no reference to it on the Internet. Hope to ask the boss about it one day. If you know, please let me know (in the comments).
Each set (price RM8.50 in 2018) comes with two boiled fishes slathered with 2 types of sambal chili (and a bowl of curry noodles).
One sambal was sweet spicy and the other was savoury sourish spicy. Both were nice and none was very sharp spicy.
The fish meat was very tender. It undraped easily from the bones in one piece like taking a thick white coat off a wire hanger.
The tender fish meat was sweet and without any fishy taste. The two mild sambals complemented the fish well.
The fish was cleaned except for a bit of gut left (the staff said it was roe but I am not sure). The soft gut tasted sweet with a bit of subtle underlying bitterness. It's nice once you acquired a taste for it.
The curry mee that come with the fishes. Besides noodles, there were tau kwa, tau geh (bean sprouts) and crunchy kang kong.
The watery curry was mildly sweet savoury spicy. Mixing in the sambal gave the curry a slight savoury spicy boost. It went well with the noodles and, of course, the fish. There was no coconut milk in this curry.
Hmm...., seems I was more hungry in 2012.
👍 If you are in Johor Bahru and want to taste a different type of curry mee, give this Terengganu curry fish noodle shop in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah a try.
Searching the Internet, I found this similar version in Ipoh 👈 click
