Finally tasted Outram Park Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha 欧南园亚华肉骨茶 one of Singapore's top bak kut teh brands. I like it 😋 It's one of my top of the mind Singapore BKT now.
Outram Park Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha was founded by Ms Gwee Peck Hua in 1973. They were at the Housing and Development Board flats at Outram Park before the complex was demolished in 1995. They moved to Havelock Road retaining the Outram Park Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha name. In 2006, Ms Gwee Peck Hua opened this Keppel Road branch in Tanjong Pagar with sister Gwee Guek Hua.
Cheerful and friendly Ms Gwee Guek Hua obliged me with a photo of her at work (after settling the bill and just before leaving).
Singleton today, I just ordered spare ribs and rice. That's all.
There's a choice of fat or lean spare rib. Naturally, I ticked the fat box 😜 When it came, it was still mostly lean with just a bit of visceral fat.
I took a bite like a bite out of a warm ice cream - oh... it was so good. The meat was tenderly juicy thanks to the visceral fat. The meat and fat were fresh and tasted naturally sweet, balanced by a bit of peppery savouriness from the soup.
The meat and fat were fall-off-the-bone tender with a bit of nice juicy chewiness.
The light body, tea coloured soup has a quite sharp peppery taste with underlying savouriness. It's nice and doesn't overpower the pork's natural sweetness 😋
You know right? I've heard more than a few times, my Malaysian friends said "Aiyah..., Singapore bak kut teh is just pepper soup like pepper pig stomach soup nia nia lah.... ".
Actually, it's not quite like that. You see when the peppery savoury soup is combined with the natural sweetness of good quality pork, the dish is transformed into something else that is awesomely delicious (nothing like peppery pig stomach soup nia nia hor). But, you have to get it with good quality fresh pork like that at Outram Park Ya Hua Rou Gu Cha @ Keppel Road.
The rice was a mix of full and broken rice but it was done beautifully with a nice tender nutty feel to the bite. Of course, if all are perfect whole grain rice it will be better lah... .
Yeah...., I have a habit of dribbling light or dark soy sauce over my plain white rice. Old habit. In 1960s Singapore when I was a child, that is itself, a meal already.
I put the free soup top up to the test. Twice. Hehe 😄
Cheapo uncle declined the wet paper towel and you char kueh. Don't be like Tony.
Recommended for you 👍 I like Ya Hua bak kut teh. Nice peppery soup with fresh good quality pork ribs. If I have any complaint, it's they don't serve prime or "dragon" rib. That would have been perfect 😄
