Looking at the succulent soya sauce browned birds in the window, I could see a certain Chew Kee & Chiew Kee DNA. These 2 stalwarts at Upper Cross Street are originally from one shop - Chew Kee, which is reputedly the first soya sauce chicken shop in Singapore (established in the 1940s). Chiew Kee is a sibling spinoff from Chew Kee. Both shops have their die hard fans.

Upper Cross Street in Singapore Chinatown used to be named Hai San Street 海山街 after the Hai San Secret Society. The Hai San triad was established in 1820s with headquarters in Penang. During its heydays, its influence stretched throughout British Malaya all the way to Singapore. Hai San was active in collecting "protection money" and other illicit activities around Kreta Ayer.

Seng kor 成哥 is the brother-in-law of Chiew Kee's owner. He had been working in Chiew Kee's kitchen for over 30 years before striking out on his own with his wife and supported by his son.

One side of a chicken breast sliced laterally through the middle and spread on top of the mound of noodles and sauce.

The chicken breast was smooth, tender and slightly moist to the bite. It tasted gently savoury sweet with subtle underlying natural chicken flavours which I like.

Generic noodles tossed with a blend of savoury soy sauce and aromatic oil. Seng kor cooked the noodles to a slight crunchy bite which I like. The sauce tasted just mildly savoury sweet just like that at Chiew Kee.

I like this homely soup as it has that familiar comforting layers of savoury flavours from dried vegetable and cuttlefish.

Didn't take a picture of the chili sauce as it looked commercially made. But, it actually tasted nicely spicy savoury - quite sharp heat with aftertaste of plum. It's quite likeable actually.
