A Jie was the first stop of our food trail before we leave Ipoh later in the afternoon, meaning we were on a tight eating and shopping schedule 😂
The staff were very helpful and soon found us a table in the crowded cafe. We were so excited, we quickly piled our table with many dishes and cups of famous Ipoh white coffee 😬
First things first, Ipoh cafes and coffee shops are judged by how well they do their Ipoh white coffee.
A Jie's coffee has a nice round body, nutty aroma and sweet bitter taste. I feel it is on par and in the same league with the coffees of famous Chang Jiang, Kongs, Nam Heong, and Sun Yuan Loong.
Soft boiled egg on toast. Once broken with a fork, the egg yolk flowed like molten gold down the crisp toast. Eggy flavour over savoury toast is so comforting and perfect with coffee.
Asam laksa.
Simple classic chee cheong fun with sweet and spicy sauce. Sprinkled with sesame seeds and aromatic fried shallot. Served with pickled green chili at the side.
When you are in A Jie, order their huge pork bao and char siew bao quickly. Do not hesitate as they sell out fast.
We managed to get only the char siew bao. The slightly sweet skin was fluffy and airy. The moist char siew filling had layers of robust savoury flavours. Together, the sweet skin and savoury char siew was the perfect pairing.
A Jie has a selection of Nyonya kueh. We picked a few such as this kueh sago with shredded coconut and gula Melaka. Great soft-tender texture and layered sweetness that is delightful with sweet bitter Ipoh white coffee. Anyone can live the tai tai life at A Jie 😬
Pandan cake with kaya is another must order at A Jie. Aromatic spongy fluffy sweet cake with layered sweetness from fresh coconut jam (kaya).
When I got home and started preparing this post, I realised that I had met boss A Jie before. I didn't realise it when I was at the cafe but we actually met in 2017. She is Ms Kong Sou Keet 江秀洁 one of the owners of Kongs when I visited their roastery in 2017 (five years ago). Ah.... that explains the quality of A Jie Cafe's Ipoh white coffee.
When you are cafe hopping in Ipoh, A Jie is one of the boxes you need to tick. Good coffee, wide range of local delights, great atmosphere and ambiance, friendly service, reasonable prices.
