These two Restoran Swee Kee 水记海南鸡饭 are not related to Restoran New Swee Kee in Senai 新瑞记海南鸡饭.
Inside the Johor Jaya branch, the layout is neat, decor is simple, furnishings are comfortable, the general environment is clean and well kept. The restaurant is air conditioned.
The staff are youthful, earnest and enthusiastic.
The menu has poached chicken, fried chicken as well as roast pork and char siew. There are also side dishes like bean sprout, preserved vegetable stew, soups, etc.
I left the ordering to KC. We had poached chicken, innards, roast pork belly and char siew, bean sprout, lotus root soup, and preserved vegetable. Two of us, we struggled to finish the food and had to takeaway some.
This was the "1/4 Lower Part" for RM16. The poached chicken was made with ordinary farm raised birds and served with a splash of blended savoury sauces and aromatic oil. The birds were fresh and expertly poached - the bird was cooked through yet there was a layer of jelly-like congealed fat under the skin. The skin and meat were soft-tender, silky smooth and juicy. They gave off a subtle chicken sweetness which was complemented by the savoury aromatic sauce. I like my Hainanese chicken to have chicken taste, so this was good 😄
The roast pork belly or siew yoke had crackly skin, tender meat and soft fat. Marination and seasoning was the mildly salty type.
Blanched chicken liver and gizzard each with their unique flavour and texture. Liver was soft and smooth like pâté and gizzard was soft crunchy. Come doused in savoury aromatic sauce. RM1 per piece of gizzard or liver - lovers of chicken offal, this place is for you 😄
Bean Sprout RM8. Not the fat Ipoh type, just blanched bean sprouts which we are used to here, splashed with a savoury watery sauce and dusted with white pepper like they do in Ipoh. Topped with fried shallot which were wet, so lost some of its crunch and aroma.
Braised Spicy Sour Vege RM12.80. This is a winner, rich with sourish spicy and savoury flavours. It was preserved mustard stewed with sardines, fried chicken neck, asam galugur, dried chili, etc., until everything is soft and all the flavours mell together.
This was my favourite dish today besides the chicken and offal.
Fragrant tender average quality grains well infused with chicken stock, grease and secret aromatic ingredients.
The ginger was my favourite. Spicy in the ginger way, fresh and perfect with the juicy gently sweet chicken.
At first I was sceptical, I mean why would I jump through all those hoops travelling between Singapore and JB just to eat chicken rice (when there are good chicken rice stalls literally everywhere on the island).
But, I had a great time at Restoran Swee Kee Chicken Rice. The environment is clean, the food is delicious and served a bit differently from Singapore, service is warm, prices are reasonable and I enjoyed catching up with buddy KC.
