Who is Tony Johor Kaki?

✍30 Apr 2025.
Sharing here my personal experience from exploring JB food by bus and on foot. It is inexpensive, most places can be reached for less than RM3, but requires considerable walking and waiting, so it is not for everyone. One option is combining bus with private hire i.e. Grab.

The buses are comfortable, clean and follow their schedules.

At the moment, I pay with cash (notes and coins). Just get the required cash notes and coins, as the driver does not give change.

There is also cashless payment contact (known as ManjaLink) card but I didn't get this (yet) as I use the bus only about once or twice a week. There is a booth for ManjaLink card purchase at JB Sentral.

When you walk, note that JB roads don't always have pavements, so it is actually unsafe to walk along roads. Do avoid these for your own safety. Stay within corridors of shops in commercial centres as far as possible.

The bus interchange at JB CIQ is known as JB Sentral. It has 11 bus berths. I sometimes come here without any plan. Just hop on any bus that is about to leave its berth, then see where it leads me to eat 😂 Don't be like Tony 😬

There is a mamak restaurant at JB Sentral. They have teh terik, prata, thosai and rice with side dishes, etc. Decent relief for hunger pangs and a drink while waiting for your bus.

Let's take a tour of the bus interchange together. The design is straightforward, just a straight line down from berth 11 nearest the CIQ exit to berth 1 at the other end (southern end).

Clicking on the red links of places below takes you to the food places I have written about. Please share your favourites too in the comments, especially those I have not written about yet 🙏

Berth 11 Bus T10 goes to Kota Tinggi town (northeast) via Larkin Sentral, the interstate bus interchange. T10 route will take you to:

Note: T10 takes a circuitous route via Larkin before heading to Aeon Tebrau. If you like a more direct route take bus T14 at berth 4 which ends in Toppen Mall (beside Aeon Tebrau). Saves you time and money.

Berth 10 bus T20 goes to Pasir Gudang in the east. Bus T20 will pass:

Plaza Pelangi near Taman Maju Jaya
Cystal Crown Hotel near Sri Tebrau Market & Taman Sri Tebrau
Pasar Borong Pandan,
Giant Plentong,

Berth 9 bus T30 goes to Kulai in the northwest. Bas T30 passes:

Plaza Angsana (Banda Baru Uda),
Saleng,

Berth 8 bus T21 to Permas Jaya in the east. This is the bus to:

Duty Free Zone (The ZON),

Berth 7 bus T32 goes to Selesa Jaya.

Berth 6 bus T31 goes to Taman Pulai Indah.

Plaza Angsana (Banda Baru Uda),
Taman Pulai Mutiara.

Berth 5 bus T13 goes to Larkin Sentral, the interstate bus interchange. It passes Taman Kebun Teh

Berth 4 bus T14 to Aeon Tebrau, Toppen Mall and IKEA. Note schedule of bus T14. They follow these timings quite diligently.

Berth 3 bus T11 goes to Seri Austin in the northeast.

Berth 2 bus F100 goes to KSL Mall in Taman Century.

Berth 1 bus T33 goes to Taman Tan Sri Yacoob.

Bus T33 is the bus to:

Plaza Angsana (Banda Baru Uda),
AEON Bukit Indah,
Taman Tan Sri Yaacob.

Berth 1 is where you can take bus AA1 to Senai Airport

Berth 1 is also the berth for JPO 1, the bus to Johor Premium Outlets

Please also share with us about your experiences and useful information / tips in the comments 🙏

Have fun, stay safe, stay patient and alert and you can enjoy JB like a local.

You may wish to check out LUGO App. I don't use it much but find the features useful, including live bus tracking, etc. LUGO can be used both in Johor Bahru and in Singapore.

Actually, you don't even need to take a bus as there are already many things you can do within walking distance from JB CIQ. You can start your JB food discoveries on foot (that's what I did when I started this blog in 2012)

F100 bus comes 2-3 buses in 1 hour. Usually have to wait 30 mins or more. The queue is often longer than the number of seats and standing passengers.

  8. The Bus Arrangements Are Very Confusing and Disorganized. The Berth And The Nos Are Not Well Planned. Having A Hard Time Locating The Correct Bus To Take !! Not Recommended 😢

  9. I'm surprised that there are so many handwritten signs at JB Sentral. I wonder why the bus company doesn't even bother to produce proper and clear signs.

I find JB bus drivers generally very friendly. They talk to passengers, just like what I remember bus drivers did in the 60s and 70s. And I like the music played on buses. Just like travelling on a tourist bus.

  19. Thank you, Tony, for the comprehensive bus guide. It’s an excellent resource for my husband and me to use on our JB road trips—though, as you mentioned, the absence of pavements does make walking feel rather vulnerable.
