San Kee Duck Rice Taman Johor JB 上记卤鸭饭.面 (第二分行)

✍️ 9 Jan 2025. Today's JB wandering brought me to Taman Johor (off Skudai Highway) which I have not been for a long time.

I remember well San Kee Teochew braised duck stall here. They have been here for thirty three years.

Towkay Lim 林章坤 and towkay neo Goh 吴若芬.

Lim together with his younger brother started San Kee braised duck stall at Jalan Lumba Kuda nearly forty years ago. Three years later Lim started this second stall at Taman Johor.

Lim's brother still runs the first San Kee stall at Shang Ji kopitiam at Jalan Lumba Kuda. Another brother runs a San Kee stall at Taman Ungku Tun Aminah. (I shall visit that soon.) Lim's eldest brother used to run a San Kee stall at Jalan Meldrum but had retired.

In my previous post on San Kee, I described the food centre as "rustic and dingy" - towkay neo highlighted to me that the place had been renovated about five years ago, so it is brighter and neater now.

Towkay Lim serves his duck boneless 去骨鴨 and is very proud of his knife skills.

Besides braised duck, San Kee also has braised duck innards and pork head parts 猪头皮. Lim said the clientele for such old school food is shrinking as many old folks shifted to "healthier" options while the young haven't acquired a taste for such food.

I was here alone - I like to do my wanderings alone🚶As I only had tummy space for one serving, I opted for kway teow soup.

It was pretty plain, understated. Just generic kway teow kia typical of JB, soaked in a dark soup and topped with duck breast slices (my request).

There was no parsley, scallion or fried shallot to dress or spice things up.

The dark soup had a good balance of Chinese spice, herb and soy sauce flavours with subtle underlying duck taste which I like.

The kway teow kia were done soft tender and the broad flat strands picked up the dark duck soup's spice and savoury flavours well.

Lim's braised duck is the winner. It was tender with a subtle squeakiness to the bite. The lean breast meat was moist with a subtle duck gamey sweetness without interference from any stock or sauce taste even though the latter were present.

While it may appear a little drab, San Kee's duck kway teow soup was no sloth in old school flavours and had nice texture too.

But, I missed their fried shallot which I liked so much. So I asked towkay Lim about it.

Lim said that the fried shallots are now grounded into a sauce. Pro-tip: Make sure to ask for it next time.

I tried more of San Kee's offerings during my previous visit in 2016. You can read the archived article by scrolling further down this post.

✍ 4 Apr 2016. Came to San Kee Duck Rice 上记卤鸭 in Taman Johor wet market at the suggestion of Jeff, my JB foodie buddy.

Taman Johor wet market is an old rustic, dingy laid back place where the community do their marketing and have simple meals.

Mr Lim and his wife have been running this braised duck and pork innards stall here for nearly 30 years.

Our order of braised duck and pork innards with rice came to RM14. I actually wanted duck innards but only pork offal was available.

The braised duck slices were laid on a bed of braised pig skin and innards, and slathered with a light gooey brown sauce.

The thin slices of braised duck breast were tender and smooth. We could taste the subtle natural sweet duck flavour beneath the gentle herbal and savoury flavours. This is the way I like my braised duck most - tender flesh and all the flavours of duck, herbs and umami are well balanced and just subtly present.

We didn't come here for the braised pork innards, just for the duck. But, we love San Kee's braided pork a lot after tasting it. It has the same delicate balance and subtlety as San Kee's duck. Finesse, in other words. Yeah, it may sound odd - I'll say these are elegant braised pork intestines ;-D

Things are done the old way at San Kee, just like these freshly fried shallot crisps laid out to cool and dry. Nope, no factory fried wood chips here.

->> San Kee is one of my favourite traditional Teochew braised duck stalls. You will like this too if you appreciate subtle delicate herbal tastes, including hints of duck flavour. May not be so tasty if your preference is for more robust savouriness and the duck flavours well masked by the braising sauce. Give San Kee a try and taste it for yourself :-D

(Mr Lim's younger brother runs Shangi Ji duck mee at Jalan Lumba Kuda in downtown JB.)
