Beach Road Fish Head Bee Hoon in Whampoa • Fish Soup that Grew on Me 美之路鱼头米粉

Beach Road Fish Head Bee Hoon 美之路鱼头米粉 | 91 Whampoa Drive, stall #01-46, Singapore 320091 (stall at Whampoa Makan Place hawker centre) 🚅 15 minute walk from Novena station ⏰ 9am - 2pm (Mon, Weds, Fri off)
Woah... I like this fish head bee hoon stall 😋 Glad I picked the right choice for brunch today 😄

Just finished my fasting medical tests and feeling famish, I walked quickly to Whampoa Makan Place (market and food centre).

There were food options (food court and such) at the hospital but no, I try my best to support hawkers whenever I can 🤭

Determined not to waste any calories, I joined the long line for Beach Road Fish Head Bee Hoon even though I was nearly starving 😬

The wait was a little long (>30 minutes) as only one person was cooking and each serving was cooked individually.

Actually, this was not my first time at Beach Road Fish Head Bee Hoon. The last time I came was four years back, I had the "Special Tom Yam Soup" version but didn't really appreciate the taste profile.

I also tried the fried fish soup back then. There were lots in the bowl from fish nuggets to vegetables, tomatoes, tofu and dried seaweed. I felt then that the flavours skewed too much towards vegetables, sourish tomatoes, and dried seaweed (not my favourite thing).

Hence, I didn't share about it in this blog. [It's me lah... I don't like sour things 😬 ]

But, the consistent long queue at Beach Road Fish Head Bee Hoon stall tells me that they must be doing something right.

So, here I am again, having another go at it.

This time, I opted for the simple thin bee hoon with fried fish and leafy greens in soup.

Friendly lady boss asked me if I want (evaporated) milk in my soup. I replied no (because evaporated milk goes only in my kopi C kosong 🤭 ).

I like this soup. Medium body, well balanced layered umami savoury with subtle sweet tangy flavour. There's tee poh and didn't felt like there was much, if any MSG / flavour powder in there 👍

The humble bee hoon (rice vermicelli) was nicely done. Tender with a subtle crunch to the bite. Nice.

The slender bee hoon picked up the umami savoury sweet tangy soup well, imparting delightful flavours to the slurpy skinny strands.

As I get older, I prefer slender bee hoon to their thick cousin, the chor bee hoon (laksa).

Everything in the bowl were winners - the soup, the bee hoon, and critically, the perfectly done fried fish nuggets.

Large pieces cut from fish, the golden outside was subtly crisp while inside the white flesh was soft and gently sweet. It tasted fresh. The flesh was not mushy soft, unlike in many other fish soup places.

I didn't count how many pieces but felt they were generous with it. I finished my bee hoon and there were still a few chunky fish nuggets in my bowl.

There weren't any fried garlic in my bowl 🙄🤔 Will remember to request next time. There were also no tomato wedges in my bowl (not that I miss them).

I like eating my fish soup noodle with cut chili padi as the sharp spicy heat jolts my tastebuds wide awake, making them more sensitive to the subtle flavours in the bowl.

I enjoyed this so much that I wanted to have another round right after this 😅

But, the queue grew too long and I settled for just a kopi (coffee). Will definitely be back - I still need to try the fried fish head, unbattered fish slices, and an encore of what I had today.

They have the tom yam since at least 2013, so they must be doing something right there. Nothing changed since that time, except for price adjustment for inflation. This photo is from A Glutton in London's blog. There was a time when there were many such blogs of personal musings. I miss such blogs for their authenticity and personal connection. It was such blogs that inspired me to start blogging
