Meng Meng Roasted Duck 阿明帝皇鴨 is a household name for roasts in Johor Bahru with its fame reaching into Singapore.
Meng Meng Roasted Duck has several outlets with the latest at lower ground level of Mid Valley Southkey in JB.
First time checking in at Mid Valley Southkey since the swanky new mall opened in Johor Bahru, 2 weeks ago. Meng Meng Roasted Duck at LG level is right next to Pizza Hut and across the foyer from the Harvey Norman store.
Meng Meng's Mid Valley shop is well furnished and comfortable inside. It's a nice place for the family and groups of friends.
We had a mixed platter of char siew, sio bak and roast duck (price RM44.80+).
The golden brown roast duck skin was crisp with a slight savoury toasty taste. The meat was tender and moist with mild herbal dang gui taste and subtle natural duck sweetness.
Meng Meng Roasted Duck owner Ah Meng started his career in his teens as an apprentice at Ya Wang herbal roast duck in downtown Johor Bahru. He opened his own roast shop in 2003 in Johor Jaya. Now, he has several outlets including in KSL Mall and more in the pipeline.
Ah Meng roasts his ducks right there in his shops, in small batches throughout the day so that customers always get freshly roasted ducks. Ah Meng uses only fresh ducks which he marinates with herbs such as dang gui but never uses artificial colouring or flavourings.
All Meng Meng roast ducks and meats are grilled with charcoal as Ah Meng believes that there is no other way to get the smokey toasty taste and aroma.
The char siew was tender with a bit of softness in the fatty layer. Taste was layered savouriness with a bit of smokey toastiness. A subtle bit of natural sweetness but no candy sweetness (of the KL kind).
The sio bak (siu yok or roasted pork belly) was firm yet tender and tasted mainly savoury in layers. The skin was crackly crisp.
Blanched fresh lady's fingers (okra) with savoury fermented bean curd sauce. Simple and very nice. (Price RM18+.)
Sour spicy vegetable stew (price RM16.80+). We love its appetising blend of tangy sweet spicy savoury flavours.
We chose noodles to go with our dishes (price RM3.80+ per serving). Simply tossed in savoury sauce, we enjoyed the taste and tender springy bite of the noodles.
Two of us, we walloped everything with gusto.
🦆 We enjoyed our lunch at Meng Meng Roasted duck. Delicious charcoal roasted duck with subtle herbal taste. Nice ambiance. Good service. Reasonable prices (especially the roasts).
Disclosure: This was an invited tasting. But, we would gladly be back on our own as we like the food here. I have tasted Meng Meng's roast duck at their Mount Austin outlet before, and I feel the standard is consistent.
