Went food spotting in the old Masai area today. When we asked passers by where do locals like to eat in Masai, we were pointed to Hwa Sun Roast Duck Rice at Jalan Jagung (a backstreet behind Masai's main street, Jalan Masai Lama).
Hwa Sun is a humble corner coffee shop type eatery in a backstreet with mostly warehouses and car repair shops as neighbours.
No frills, not much ambience here. Just comfortable enough.
Slabs of freshly roasted sio bak (siew yok 烧肉) hanging in the window. Besides sio bak, Hwa Sun serves roast duck, char siew and braised chicken feet.
Master roaster Mr Law has been a meat roaster for over 30 years. Hwa Sun's meats are roasted with charcoal at the shop.
Mr Law's wife and son also works at Hwa Sun.
The family was slightly reserved but graciously obliged my request to snap some pictures ;-D
We just tasted Hwa Sun's famous sio bak for this round. (We had been eating since day break :-p )
Hwa Sun's sio bak has a good mix of lean meat, fat and skin. The meat and fat were tender and moist. The mild savoury flavour was balanced with slight porcine sweetness. The golden brown skin wasn't thick but it was crispy enough for us to clearly hear it crackle and snap inside our ears with every bite.
Hwa Sun's is definitely one of the better sio bak 烧肉 in Johor (RM65 per kilo).
We also shared a roast duck drumstick and our bill (with rice and sio bak) came to RM19 altogether.
The roast duck drumstick was juicy and very delicious but I am not blogging about it yet - got to come back with more kakis and appreciate at least half a duck first :-D
->> If you are in the Masai area, do try out Hwa Sun's roast meats. It's among the best in JB for me, and you may like it too :-D
