Char Siew 水晶叉烧 @ You Kee XO Restaurant in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah

You Kee XO main branch at Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Skudai

You Kee XO is famous for their roasts

I just tasted a very special char siew at You Kee XO restaurant in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah (TUTA). The restaurant calls this their crystal char siew 水晶叉烧.

水晶叉烧
To start with, it does not look like any other ordinary char siew. This char siew looks translucent even though it is cut into thick chunky pieces unlike the usual thin slices. It actually reminds me of a piece of candy or a nougat.

When I bite into it, it felt slightly bouncy on the outside. Once you have bitten through the caramelised, slightly charred outer layer, the succulent inside is tender. Chewing this firm and tender combination is a pleasure to the taste buds. The flavour is naturally sweet and tasty. Overall this is more like a flavourful meat candy than your typical char siew.

This unique char siew is outstanding in looks, flavour, taste and bite. Definitely a must try.

  1. The food served was far from what was described here!
The siew yok and char siew was cold, hard and the crisp of the
siew yok skin was never found!

    all the way from Singapore . . . . .

  2. Sorry to hear that your experience was different from mine. My visit and this post was nearly two years old now. I shall revisit to see how is the food here nowadays. Generally, F and B business changes rapidly. Reviews need to be updated whenever possible. Thanks.

  3. Thank you for posting my comments. The Tmn Johor Jaya XO branch refers.

For your info, just a stone throw away, the 'family' food court holds a stall
selling pig's trotters and knuckles prepared by thai ladies is a knock out!

    1. I went to try but found out that the Thai ladies' stall is already closed. Thank you for your recommending.
