✍ 8 Jul 2024. Back at Chin Chin in Skudai, one of my favourite wanton noodle places in Johor and Singapore. Have not been back since the Covid pandemic.
The old wanton mee shop far from the tourist belts of Johor Bahru was busy, life had returned to normal, the pandemic was behind us.
Of course there's black, white and red but we instinctively ordered like Singaporeans - red.
Chin Chin 2024 is still the wanton mee I fell in love with on first bite back in 2012 during my first foodie forays to Skudai.
Boss did the house made duck egg noodles a bit soft today but its springy crunch was still felt - nice.
I like my duck egg noodles well greased, so I was pleased that today's noodles were well smothered and wet with lard, aromatic oil, soy sauce, chili sauce, etc.
Just the right level of lardiness, savouriness and spicy heat for me.
The char siew was sweet but at least it was tender, moist and had visceral fat.
I ordered braised chicken feet because I recalled that Chin Chin's egg noodles and chicken feet & mushroom sauce were a perfect pair. Shall order that next time.
Meanwhile, the chicken feet were nice - the soft skin, fat, and tendon were fall-off-the-bone tender and well infused with savouriness from the braising stock.
The wantons were old school - small envelopes filled with a tender knob of minced fatty pork marinated with soy sauce, sesame oil, and pepper.
Still a consistently good wanton noodle place I will come back to regularly.

✍ 14 Feb 2012. Restoran Chin Chin 晶晶云吞面 is a popular wanton mee shop near the prominent MPJBT building in Skudai, serving customers since 1988. It's 30 minutes drive north of JB, away from the tourist belt.
Restoran Chin Chin first caught my eye when I was at MPJBT building. I was getting my haircut from my regular barber after paying my bills.
I noticed that there was a constant stream of customers at the wanton mee shop next door. I tried Chin Chin wanton noodles once and have since become one of its regular customers.
Chin Chin's house made wanton noodle is the more slender kind. It feels softer than the noodles at other top wanton mee shops. It is almost like an eggy kind of mee sua (Hokkien for rice thread). Yet it still has that soft al dente bite and crunchiness characteristic of good wanton noodles.
The noodles are complemented by a sauce that has lard and sesame fragrance and that is slightly spicy.
I especially like Chin Chin's popular wanton noodles with chicken claws and black mushrooms.
The chicken claws are well prepared. They are deep fried and then braised in soy sauce based braising stock. They are braised till even the bones are soft. I liked it so much that I ate the jelly soft skin and bones completely.
The noodles are bathed in the braising stock made with chicken claws, black mushrooms and soy sauce. It is tasty and complements the slender, soft, crunchy and eggy noodles very well.
The accompanying chicken soup is clear and tasty. The generous amount of chye sim (green vegetables) in the soup gives it a refreshing green leafy flavour.
The wantons have generous minced pork fillings. The fragrance of fresh pork and sesame is released with every bite of the wanton.
Whenever I am in the MPJBT area I will have an encore of Chin Chin's wanton mee.
👍 One of JB's favourite traditional wanton noodles with a signature gentle spring to the bite. The soft crunch of the eggy slender noodles can be addictive. If you are a wanton mee fan, this is a Must Try.

have u try masai' wanton mee
ReplyDeleteI have tried some. Which one do you recommend?
DeleteMasai wanton mee? Which one??
ReplyDeleteI stay near Masai and yet every time I need to eat something edible I have to go all the way to Johor Jaya --- as almost everything Masai and eastward has no taste
But I found a wanton mee stall operated by a guy from Kedah near the Pelangi area okay - just okay, and by JB standard his mee is not expensive
I always order the '3X' size plate (with 3X the noodle, and he only charge me RM7
Yes, I haven't found anything in Masai yet. What is the name of the Pelangi stall? On which street is it? Would love to try it. Thank you.
DeleteTry the kolo mee and wantan mee in tmn pelangi next to kingspa and opposite Hong Leong Bank. It is in a small kopitiam called soon Lee kopitiam. My personal favorite.
ReplyDeleteThere is a nice Wanton Mee store at the coffeeshop beside the HK Restaurant Dinosaur along Jalan Perang at Taman Pelangi.
ReplyDeletehave travelled pass skudai many times and only visited chin chin recently. i like the flavor and the noodle. it suits my taste better than the famous one near the causeway. i shall ask for more lard oil in my next visit. tks for the recommendation.
