Kek Lapis Sarawak @ One Food and Cake House in Pandan City, Johor Bahru

Today, I discovered the vivid colours and stunning beauty of Kek Lapis Sarawak or Sarawak layered cakes.

Kek lapis Sarawak looks so happy and cheerful that I felt uplifted just by looking at its kaleidoscope of colours.

And, I would like to dedicate this post on kek lapis Sarawak to my dear friend Isabel on her birthday and wish her happiness and health just like the vibrancy of these special cakes.

Making these beautiful multicoloured layered cakes takes lots of dedication and teamwork.

Each staff helps build the kek lapis Sarawak by hand, layer by layer. Fruit jam is spread between each layer to hold the layers together.

The final step to shrink wrap the multicoloured bricks which are sold at One Food and Cake House at factory prices of RM50 each. At retail shops, the same kek lapis Sarawak retails for RM55 to RM70, depending on the outlet.

The tasty, taster pack of 6 pieces of kek lapis Sarawak is available at RM10.

The kek lapis Sarawak tastes sweet with buttery and eggy flavours. Like flowers, it has the delicate fragrance of fruit. The cake is dense and heavy. This traditional cake complements coffee and tea very well, and is a great companion for chirpy tête-à-tête with friends J

I feel these kek lapis Sarawak make great gifts as the sight of it alone would bring joy to the person receiving the beautiful and unique cake J

There are only three shops making traditional kek lapis Sarawak in Johor Bahru. One Food and Cake House in Pandan City is the first one. One Food and Cake House is owned by Mohd Iszwandi who grew up with the traditional cakes of Sarawak as his mum is a Sarawakian.

One Food and Cake House also makes a variety of other cakes and rolls as well. I picked a Choc Roll with Kinder Bueno - White for RM23. Iszwandi told me that their choc rolls are also hot sellers like their kek lapis Sarawak.

I liked this choc roll too J. The choc roll is not-too-sweet and has crunchy bits of Kinder Bueno biscuits inside.

One Food and Cake House has really convenient opening hours from 9:00am to midnight except on Monday which is their rest day. One Food and Cake House is open 24 hours during Ramadan. Great place to pick up delicious and colourful gifts at factory prices J.

  1. Look nice. but then the colors too strong. Every times when I see Kuih or cakes with that strong colors makes me sick .Too much food coloring don't seem right. I never buy these kind of cakes. Prefer the original.

  4. Thanks for the interesting write-up. I noticed that most of the reviews are on eateries in the older part of JB. How about more reviews of eating areas in the Iskander region?
