We have been regular customers at Ah Soon bak kut teh 亚顺肉骨茶 in Taman Sri Tebrau for more than a decade. We especially love their excellent sesame oil chicken and also liked their popular bak kut teh.
Through all these years, Ah Soon still has a loyal following in a very crowded market of bak kut teh shops in JB, with new shops sprouting up literally every other week.
Ah Soon's bak kut teh come in a piping hot claypot with chunks of blanched looking meat in a light looking steaming, furiously bubbling herbal broth.
Typically Teochew style, the flavours were delicate and relied on the fresh natural sweetness of the pork for taste.
Nothing overpowering in terms of saltiness, sweetness or smell of herbs - just exquisite delicate flavours in a buzzing, crammed, casual come-as-you-are kopitiam setting.
The preserved, soft green vegetable was only slightly satly and dominant tastes were sweet and tangy. Works well to whet the appetite for the chunks of meat in the claypot.
I like their specially blended syrupy black sauce which was sweet and salty. Drizzle it over the fresh hot cut chili and eat it with the lightly flavoured chunks of tender, chewy meat.
Chewing the tastes of sweet, savoury, spicy hot gelled with the creamy texture of tender fat and lean pork makes a delightful treat for the taste buds.
We will be back for Ah Soon's bak kut teh for many more years to come :)
->> JB people's long time favourite for bak kut teh and sesame oil chicken. The broth is mildly herbal allowing the natural sweetness of the fresh pork to shine. Their sesame oil chicken is also a crowd puller.

Deletehave been using this road many many times over the years but have never stopped by this BKT shop until i read your blog. last month, we arrived before the lunch crowd. the pork was tender , sweet and meaty. the pork liver pieces were thick (what it should be) and cruncy as it was just cooked. the stewed tao po was piping hot and well made. overall, the food suits our taste and shall be back for more. tks , johorkaki.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it :)
DeleteAte there on 27 Aug 2013.
ReplyDeleteThe BKT is now very lousy tasting! Expensive too.
Such a difference from what I tasted here years ago.
The wait staff from East Malaysia was grumpy and rude.
This is what fame does to an eating place.
I haven't been here for a while. Time to revisit :-D
DeleteI tried it today because Crystal BKT (Bak Cheng) was closed. This is the first time I tried Ah Soon BKT, and I must say that I like it very much. It's light (herbs not heavy), thus I reckon my kids will like it. Thanks JK for your recommendation! I will go back for more.
ReplyDeleteGlad you like it too :-D
