Several of my JB friends are ardent fans of Xi Ji 喜记 Penang prawn mee in Koon Chong 群众 kopitiam in Taman Sri Tebrau. They have been asking me to check out 喜记's best Penang prawn mee in JB.

With such strong recommendations, I had to visit 喜记 Penang prawn mee :)

Stall name:喜记 Xi Ji Penang Prawn Noodle

喜记 Penang prawn mee is set deep inside Koon Chong 群众 kopitiam, so we had to go right inside the kopitiam to locate it.

Early in the morning and Ah 喜 was already busy whipping up his popular Penang prawn mee for a constant stream of waiting customers.

Ah 喜 was assisted by his wife and son, so service was good and fast even during peak hours.

This delicious bowl of 喜记 Penang prawn mee costs a reasonable RM4.50 (2012 price).

Penang prawn mee is all about its prawn broth. 喜记's light looking soup has a robust savoury, prawny crustacean flavour - a well balanced blend of delicate savouriness, sweetness and spicy hot.

My friend Kumes aptly described the taste as "umami".

Another thing that sets 喜记 Penang prawn mee apart from other Penang prawn mee stalls in JB are these two little steel bowls, one containing chili powder and the other chili sauce.

If you like your prawn noodle soup extra spicy, just add this "gun powder" to fire up your  taste buds.

The prawn mee comes with slices of fresh shrimps, and pork. These go very well with the chili sauce which is slightly tangy, distinctly prawny and very spicy.

喜记 Penang prawn mee is definitely among the best Penang prawn mee in Johor Bahru.

👉 A good simple Penang style prawn mee is enough to kick the day off to a great start.

  2. so what do you think vs pelangi? i feel pelangi has a slightly more robust soup, but this place has better toppings and its a nicer place to hang out, i believe both PP food corner and koon chong share the kitchen?

the pau the sell there is also very good. not sure if they make it themselves, but they definitely source it from a good supplier if they do.

  3. Like penang prawn mee, try the one at stall 168 at coffeeshop at junction of jalan badik and jalan badik 1, opposite the teck hin tyres, round the corner from wisma tiong hua.

The broth is sweet and rich. have to hurry though, its usually sold out by 1230pm.

  4. I tried this yesterday. Prawns were very microscopic..lol...San Ming still the best overall. But this one got the red gunpowder out of the 3 listed by Bro JK in this blog. So it made all the difference..

Prawn size very much smaller than the ones in the pic..not sure whether they serve the bak kut or pigs tail..would really add value if they do.

  5. LOL yes, I am hearing the prawns can get quite small on some days. They don't serve the bak kut or pigs' tail. I would love that too! :)

  7. This morning, based on the review here, I buy 1 x RM$7 packet for my wife as prawn mee is her fav. While the fella is cooking it, I had a good smell of the soup and asked for an additional small RM$5 packet for myself as I had just had Char Kway Teow at nearby Teen Tian Lai coffee shop.

When I got home, soup and met still hot as I could not wait to try it. But much to my disappointment, this prawn mee is nothing special at all. Wife had a taste of my bowl and gave me the look....and till now, more then 12hours later, her packet still in the fridge....

Guess it will end up in the rubbish bin tomorrow.

    1. Dear Anonymous, thank you for your comment and I am sorry to hear that it was so bad that you had to throw it away after just one mouthful. This stall is just one of at least 3 prawn mee stalls in the same area all within 2-3 minutes walk of each other. This stall has been selling 5 to 6 large pots of prawn mee soup every day for the last nearly 20 years. I haven't eaten there for a few months. Shall revisit to see what has happened. Thank you. Tony.

    2. Hi today is 7 Sep 2022. This prawn noodle stall is still around and doing well 10 years after your complain. Can't be that bad as you claim.

  8. I would say this is one of the best Penang Hokkien Mee( as it's more popularly known back in Penang) that one can find in JB. If one complains that the prawns served are too small, then I know right away that our friends must be not from Penang. The authentic Penang prawn mee are served with small and sliced fried-chillied prawn and the broth are prepared by using the hard shell " sua lao" prawns! Only the Penangites can discern the authenticity of Penang prawn mee so to speak. Especially among the food connoisseurs.
