The Johor food forums are abuzz with excitement about Ratatouille La Gourmet and several friends have recommended the stall to me.
Today, I am fortunate to meet Anson and his girlfriend Michelle who are big fans of Ratatouille La Gourmet and they brought me and our mutual friend William here in Setia Indah.
Ratatouille La Gourmet is a stall in Fu Sin 福星 kopitiam.
Like any koiptiam stall, the dining area consists of plastic folding tables and stackable plastic chairs along a side street tucked between two rolls of shop houses. Customers have to be careful of cars squeezing past between the tables, before the side road is closed to traffic after 6:00pm.
Ratatouille La Gourmet stall offers most of the dishes at swanky Western restaurants, at very reasonable prices.
The menu in Chinese.
Ratatouille La Gourmet opens from 5:30pm to 10:00pm from Weds to Sunday.
The man behind Ratatouille La Gourmet is friendly Chef Brian Soon.
Brian currently works in a 4-star rank restaurant in Holland Village, Singapore and is at his own Ratatouille La Gourmet stall in JB on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Brian is a family man and doting father with 2 children and the third child due soon.
Brian explaining the menu to a customer. Where else can one find a multiple award winning Chef, personally serving customers at a kopitiam?
The complimentary mushroom soup that comes with main course orders is made with diced fresh mushrooms.
We also got half a dozen of large pan fried spongy button mushrooms for appetizers.
We had 6 escargot for starters at RM18 or SGD7.
The succulent escargot was savoury and had an interesting tender yet slightly chewy mouth feel. Escargot is one of Brian's award winning dishes.
The Grilled Salmon with Pumpkin Sauce (RM23) was a thick slab of nicely grilled salmon on a bed of Brian's signature ratatouille.
(Ratatouille is like a French style rojak. Each vegetable like broccoli, zucchini, tomato, egg plant, and bell peppers are cut in chunks and cooked separately. The crunchy vegetables are then tossed like rojak in a tangy, savoury sauce and served as a hearty side.)
Very slightly crispy outside while inside the slab of fish, it was tender and moist.
Rosemary Chicken for RM15 - the looks alone wowed all of us when this arrived at our table. The outside of the inviting plump thigh was golden brown with slightly charred bits. The bulging thigh looked filled with warm juice.
Look at that tender and succulent chicken meat sitting in that savoury brown sauce.
Beautifully prepared USA Angus Ribeye at RM60 or SGD23. Beat that!
The meat was done medium well.
The meat was tender and juicy inside while outside there was a savoury, smokey thin caramelized layer.
The Roast Lamb Rack made with New Zealand lamb at RM60.
Our thick lamb rack was done medium.
Tender, moist meat with a nice, very mild lamb flavour.
Ratatouille La Gourmet was an extra stop at the end of our 2 day food trail (at the insistence of Anson who is a big fan of Ratatouille La Gourmet). We were so full but that did not stop us from ordering 4 main courses and finishing it all.
We love everything we tried today at Ratatouille La Gourmet.
We will surely be back to try the other items at Ratatouille La Gourmet, especially the pastas as well as Wagyu and Foie Gras (which require pre-booking).
Highly recommended.
This is a rare opportunity to enjoy quality Western dishes at kopitiam prices.
Get it now.
(Thanks to Anson who graciously took the tab for this scrumptious meal.)

ReplyDeleteThey are moving to the next kopitiam, a few shops away along the same street.
DeleteThey are moving to the same row corner lot kopitiam which selling curry fish head. Although is not kopitiam price but it worth every cent with the quality of the food you are getting. Every meal comes with complimentary of soup + there is no service tax. I will pay my nx visit very soon.
ReplyDeleteAt RM60, that is a fine dining restaurants.price in JB. But the rest of the menu are quite cheap.
