We spotted this beautiful sight while food spotting at Johor Jaya Family Food Court. So, we hung around smelling the spice aroma for a while and patiently stalked our potential target. When the queue kept growing, we moved in.

Freshly deep fried chicken leg.

These chicken legs were marinated with Kelantan style blend of spices and deep fried till golden brown.

During my past visits to Kelantan, nasi kukus ayam goreng berempah Kelantan was one of the memorable dishes I enjoyed there. So, I was really excited that this Kelantan speciality is now available in Johor Bahru.

Each batch of fried chicken takes about 20 minutes to cook and are snapped up by waiting customers the moment they leave the wok of hot oil.

Besides the fried chicken leg we can have add ons like grilled fish, potatoes, tau kwa pau, eggs, vegetables and so on at additional cost.

Each RM8 set of nasi kukus comes with rice, acar (pickled vegetables), a deep fried chicken leg and splashes of gulai (curry) and sambal chili. I added RM1 of leafy green vegetables.

In Kelantan, the rice is steamed (not boiled) in individual aluminium cups hence the name nasi kukus which means steamed rice.

The main star - the fried chicken was crispy outside with a coat of flavoursome aromatic Kelantan style marinade. Inside, the chicken flesh was tender and moist. It is best enjoyed piping hot straight out of the wok of hot oil.

The curry splashed on the rice was just mildly spicy. But, that sambal chili, I have to warn you, has a very sharp hot sting.

The boss, Mr Cheong hails from Kuala Lumpur and had worked for 13 years in Singapore hotels like Furama and in Sentosa. Mr Cheong's wife is Kelantanese, so it is natural that they start a Kelantan style nasi kukus stall.
