Jadi Baru Botak Asam Pedas in JB Johor where All Malaysians Eat Together

Today, we gathered with friends for lunch at the popular Jadi Baru restuarant which everybody knows as "Botak asam pedas". This is the usual scene at lunch time at Botak. The famous JB eatery is named after its owner who sports a bald hairstyle.

Five of us shared these dishes at Botak asam pedas.

Of course, we start with Botak's claim to fame - their popular asam pedas fish head.

The fresh Jenahak (golden snapper fish) is cut into big meaty chunks. They are tender, juicy and sweet.

I love Botak's asam pedas. It's watery but packed with flavour. It's well balanced savoury and spicy with slight sourish flavour. The pulpy chilli flakes floating in the asam pedas has a mild lingering spicy sting. It "opens the appetite" to enjoy all the dishes as well as simple plain white rice 😃

Well fried fish tail or ikan goreng (I forgot to ask what fish this was but it's probably a Janahak). Was too busy eating, enjoying the food and company 😂

The meaty fresh fish was fried till the outside is crisp and well browned. The inside was still snowy white, moist and naturally sweet.

Simple sautéed la la clams.

But, it was so good. The mild savoury spicy sweet sauce brought out the natural sweetness of the soft clams (which were fresh and very well cleaned).

Chunky, meaty Muar style otak otak wrapped in banana leaf. Tender, juicy, mildly spicy sweet savoury.

Simple fried bitter gourd with egg. The crunchy juicy bitter gourd is sweet 😋

Botak's fried bee hoon is infused with seafood stock aromas and flavours that reminded us of Singapore style white bee hoon.

4-Star (out of 5). Nice and simple lunch. All the ingredients are fresh and served with mild well balanced flavours that bring out their natural sweetness. Botak's signature asam pedas and ikan goreng live up to their longstanding reputation.

I do not know the exact cost of today's lunch as it was my friend's treat. Botak Asam Pedas is known for slightly premium pricing which is worth it for the fresher quality ingredients.

Actually, Jadi Baru Botak Asam Pedas was one of the earliest places I blogged about - way back in Dec 2011 😮 👈 click
