Our lunch was at Piggy's Korean BBQ Restaurant in Thornhill which is popular with Koreans in Toronto.
Piggy's Korean BBQ is located in a little cluster of shops a short walk from the sprawling Centerpoint Mall.
Inside Piggy's, it's no frills. In the long space, tables and seats were set in straight rows with shiny large overhead smoke extractors. Not very pretty but practical and comfortable.
Piggy's have a full menu of traditional Korean fare from stews to fry, grill, bibimbob to table BBQ dishes which they are most famous for ๐
Piggy's table BBQ is still fired by charcoal (so there is a little though minimal smoke and it is slightly warmer here than those BBQ places which use flameless induction stoves). But, charcoal is more charming to me and in Toronto during Winter or early Spring, a little more warmth is always appreciated.
We ordered the "Salted Pork Neck" - the set comes with a full complement of side dishes, fresh lettuce and sauces.
As I got butter fingers and was busy with my camera, I am very appreciative of the friendly staff who helped with the BBQ cooking - turning the slices of pork at the right moments on the sizzling hot plate.
With deft hands, he snipped the grilled pork slices into little bite size squares.
We are ready to eat ๐
By itself, the squares of grilled pork were tender, slightly crisp and dry outside while inside it was still a little moist. The flavour was mildly savoury-salty.
Next time, I would opt for more fatty cuts like pork belly as I like my BBQ meat to be very juicy and have more natural porky sweetness.
The custom is to take a leaf of fresh lettuce, slather in some savoury-spicy sauce (ssamjang), then add in some sides like garlic and onion as desired together with the grilled pork.
Then, fold in the leaf into an egg size bundle and eat it in one mouthful. In the mouth, it is a mix of textures and flavours from the jumble of ingredients.
This is a traditional Korean wrap known as ssam.
๐ For CDN48 all in with tax and tips, we had a very filling and satisfying meal with many textures and delicious flavours. The service was friendly, helpful and warm. We enjoyed our experience at Piggy's Korean BBQ as the food and service are very good.
