Sing Sing B.B.Q. Best Cheap and Good Cantonese Roast in Toronto?

Sing-Sing-B.B.Q.-Toronto?

I have passed by Sing Sing B.B.Q. House a few times while searching for good things to eat in Toronto. But, Sing Sing B.B.Q. is a take out only shop, so it was only today that I finally bought a roast duck from them to eat at home.

Sing Sing B.B.Q. is located near the junction of Gerrard St. East and Broadview Ave which is Toronto's East Chinatown. This is the other, lesser known Chinatown about an hour's walk due east from Toronto's Old Chinatown at Spadina Ave.

Like it's counterpart Old Chinatown at Spadina, East Chinatown has seen better days. I heard that there used to be more Cantonese roast shops here at Broadview and Gerrard St. East, but today there are only Sing Sing and Wok & Roast left. The two last Cantonese roasts in East Chinatown are side by side at Broadview Ave.

In terms of shop space, Sing Sing which stretches two shop fronts is a bigger shop (compared to Wok & Roast). But, Sing Sing now only provides counter service and the restaurant section is closed.

Sing Sing has the full range of traditional Cantonese roasts from siew yok to char siew, roast duck, roast chicken, soya sauce chicken to cuttlefish etc. There is always a queue near meal times.

At CDN20 nett for a whole roast duck, Sing Sing charges the lowest price of all the Cantonese roast shops that I have tried in Toronto.

The roast duck was chopped and packed in two Styrofoam boxes. I took them on a whole day of shopping and sightseeing before going home 😄

On opening, they looked slightly flattened and a bit dried out. The roast duck had also chilled by the time I reached home as the outside temperature was about 10° C today.

We popped the duck into the microwave for a minute to warm it up.

Sing Sing's roast duck is comparable with all those that I have tried in Toronto so far. The golden brown skin was soft like all the rest are. But, it was flavoursome with savoury marinate and natural duck gaminess. The thick fat was wet with juice and flavoursome. The meat was tender and moist, and the 5-spice flavour was moderately robust.

I also ordered a braised duck liver but the boss didn't charge me for it. It's a nice goodwill gesture from the boss even though this was my first time buying anything from Sing Sing.

The liver was cooked a little stiff and was a blend of savoury and metallic taste. I didn't quite like it.

👉 Sing Sing B.B.Q.'s roast duck is comparable in texture and flavour with all that I have tried in Toronto so far. With the best pricing in town, I feel it is worth a short detour to East Chinatown to pick up your Cantonese roasts for lunch/ dinner at home or for parties.
