We visited Kanpai Yakiniku in Taipei and had a really great time. The beef and pork are top notch, service is excellent, the decor is cosy and the crowd here is infectiously happy. It feels really good here - full of positive vibes. I wanna be back 😄
I like the atmosphere here. The space is a little tight and for the most part rather dim except for spotlights over the smokeless BBQ stoves.
Customers can choose to sit at the bar overlooking the open kitchen and watch the frenetic action. I would try the bar seats next time.
This is Kanpai Yakiniku's first shop opened in 1999 when the founders were still in university. The founders got together to open a place where they and customers can enjoy themselves and meet people. Kanpai Yakiniku now has several branches in Taiwan and China with posh, contemporary decor. A branch in London is in the pipeline.
I am glad that we came to the rather humble founding shop as I think it still has the original spirit that inspired the founders to open Kanpai Yakiniku. Kanpai Yakiniku's three principles >

Iberico de Bellota pork. (Acorn fatten free range pigs from Spain - widely acknowledged as among the best pork in the world.)

The staff helps out with the BBQ cooking, so we don't have to worry about burning our premium beef or pork while we are busy enjoying our friends' company 😄
I loved everything I tasted here. My favourite is the Australian wagyu - it was so tender, juicy, sweet and beefy. I also like the Iberico de Bellota pork - who wouldn't love these olives on four legs right... ? The beef tongues were also nice - it's slight chewiness added variety to the soft tender textures of the other beef and pork cuts.
The smokeless BBQ stove doesn't leave BBQ smells on our clothes and hair 👍
I suggest eating your meat with a bowl of Kanpai's boiled white rice. The locally grown 越光米 grains have a tender nutty texture and mild sweetness that complements the flavours of the pork and beef perfectly.
There are miso and lime dipping sauces but I didn't use them as I like to taste my beef and pork neat.
There are plenty of beers, stout, and of course, sake for merry making 😄 They have zesty signature non alcoholic drinks as well..... .
I like the staff's eye catching Formula 1 style coat 😄
Don't come to Kanpai Yakiniku and expect to have a quiet romantic dinner. No. This is a noisy, even rowdy place full of cheerful banter, laughter, a lot of movement and people having fun. The sound happy people make was so loud, I didn't notice the background music 😂
But, wait - you may not be able to kiss your partner in a romantic restaurant but here in Kanpai Yakiniku, couples are encouraged, even bribed to kiss publicly 💋💋💋
Couples who kissed at least 10 seconds and have their picture taken are awarded a plate of beef.
During the hour we were at Kanpai, at least 3 couples took up the challenge and won 👏👏👏 Taiwanese people love life 😄 At this rate, I can imagine they give out a lot of plates of beef every night 😄😄😄
👉 Next time I am in Taipei and want to eat yakiniku, I will be happy to come back to Kanpai - they have premium beef and pork, the casual no frills decor feels very welcoming which I like, the service staff are cheerful, and everyone around are enjoying themselves, infecting all with happiness and positive energy. It's a crazy little joint - a super fun place to eat and have a good time!
