Dong Hong at Stall 62 of the Taman Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre is popular among JB locals for traditional Teochew kueh. The moment they open for business at 4pm from Saturday to Tuesday, regulars descend on the stall to take away bags of their favourite Teochew kueh 😄
Stall owner Chee Siong's mum had been running Dong Hong kueh stall here for 30 years. Chee Siong joined her and eventually took over the stall over ten years ago.
Li Mean who is an ACCA qualified accountant joined Chee Siong at the stall after they marry.
Together, Chee Siong and Li Mean make a bewildering variety of savoury and sweet Teochew kueh. There are also Malay kueh like ondeh ondeh etc.
I tried some savoury kueh. Chee Siong and Li Mean make everything from scratch with fresh ingredients, including the chili sauce.
I like the savoury sweet chili sauce with a briefly lingering mild spicy kick. It has a thick sticky texture as Chee Siong adds starch to it so that the sauce can stick to the kueh. Nice.
Fresh chives always works for me. The skin is made with a blend of wheat and tapioca flour.
I love radish cake especially when it is softly tender inside and aromatic as the mash is made with lots of real radish.
The greased skin of the sweet kueh are made with glutinous rice flour and filled with crushed peanuts, grated coconut, green bean mash or red bean mash. All are hand made by Chee Siong and Li Mean. I love all of the them 😋
My favourites are those filled with bean mash, both red and green.
They are not overly sweet and have a slight graininess which I love.
👉 When you are in the Sri Tebrau area, remember to pick up some tasty traditional kueh at the hawker centre from Dong Hong 东鸿糕粿 stall 😄 Most of the popular selections are sold out within 2 hours of opening, so be early woh 😄
