I made my first trip to Thailand (in Hatyai) in 1981. One of the most memorable things from that trip was the taste of fried chicken leg from a street side stall. I can't remember how it actually tasted, but from that moment on, I must have a street side fried chicken leg every time I am in Thailand. It is one of my favourite foods ever since.
Today, my friend brought me to Yaowarat (Bangkok Chinatown) for reputedly the best fried chicken in town. The restaurant's Thai name เจ้ปุ่นไก่ทอด translates to Japanese fried chicken. We like to call it "YFC, Yaowarat Fried Chicken" 😄
Not KFC but hey, YFC is a full fledged fried chicken restaurant, no less - just steps from The Old Siam Shopping Plaza in Yaowarat.
But better than KFC, YFC fresh chicken is battered and deep fried right in front beside a busy street in full view of customers. This is one thing KFC can never match YFC.
The chef was frying chicken non stop the whole time we were there at YFC.
They have deep fried strips of pork also.
The oil looked a little well browned but I think it can't be helped with the sheer volume and pace of business at the shop. Pro tip: Come here in the morning, soon after the restaurant opens for the day.
Customers get to pick freshly fried chicken and pork hot off the wok.
The fried chicken leg and breast were cut open to let the hot oil reach deeper and fry the meat crispier.
The staff will chop the chicken into bite size chunks. Personally, I prefer to have the whole piece of leg and tear it to pieces with my teeth while they are still strong 😬
The golden brown batter outside was thin and crisp. The skin was also crispy. The whole piece of chicken was hot to the touch and bite. The crispy outside tasted mainly mildly savoury.
The tender juicy white meat inside was also mildly savoury but with subtle fresh chicken sweetness.
The fried chicken comes with a robustly savoury salty dip which makes the chicken saltier.
Information for you 👌 The fried chicken was nice but I would like it more if it was juicier and sweeter. But, my friend like it the YFC way - the "best fried chicken in town". If you are in Yaowarat in the morning or noon, this local favourite Thai style fried chicken could be one of your stops.
