Through the years (decades actually), Hotel Mutiara's Ramadan buffet have earned a reputation of offering a sumptuous spread of scrumptious traditional Malay cuisine with a complementary selection of Arabic, Western and Chinese dishes.
Follow me as I take a photo walk around Mutiara's Ramadan Buffet preview (last night before the crowds come in).
The Ramadan buffet is held at Seri Mutiara restaurant - I've been eating here for over 30 years. Ramadan is the best time to taste many traditional Malay dishes all at once, at one price. (They have 5 different menus on rotation, so what you will have is likely to be different from what we had below.)
Siput (seaside snails) and kerang (cockles) stewed in curry spices. Two of my favourite dishes at nasi campur stalls.
Daging Salai Air Asam. Grilled beef with sourish spicy asam sauce.
Meat stuffed squid stewed in curry.
Ikan Patin Tempoyak. Catfish in durian and curry spice sauce.
Redang Kupang Pucuk Paku. Mussels and ferns stewed in mildly spicy curry. Four of my favourite things together - meaty mussels, pulpy fern, sweet coconut milk, curry spices.
These were just some of the dishes to give you an idea.
Love live stations - Mutiara's Ramadan buffet have many.
One of the things I appreciate about Mutiara's Ramadan buffet is their tradition of involving the entire hotel staff. Non F & B staff run some of the live stations making and cooking traditional kueh just as they would at home. This gives the buffet spread the warmth of home cooked food which add to the family spirit of celebrating the Holy Month.
A bit of many things on my first round 😄
Satay. 😄 No matter how adventurous one's palate, there's always stomach space for familiar comfort food.
Go to buffet and use up precious stomach space on roti canai? But, this one was good - nice light fluffy crisp with very little grease.
They have quite a tasty, authentic rendition of Laksa Johor with minced fish, spices, sambal chili, and spaghetti. Yes spaghetti, authentic Laksa Johor uses spaghetti.
In the late 1800s, Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor visited Italy and fell in love with spaghetti. On returning to Johor, he instructed the palace chef to make a laksa dish with spaghetti, hence the iconic Laksa Johor dish we have today.
Bubur Lambuk Kampung Baru. Traditional, simple way to break fast in many Johor homes. Just rice boiled to a lumpy porridge in chicken and beef stock. Tastes savoury with underlying rice sweetness.
Try tapai ubi kayu which is fermented tapioca. Soft and saturated with sweet tangy juices that tastes like coconut or rice wine.
I like to start and end my Ramadan buffet feasting with dates.
Information for you 👉 Mutiara Hotel's Ramadan buffet presents a good spread of traditional Malaya dishes with supporting sections of Arabic, Chinese and Western, so there's something for everyone.
