Met up with buddies at Sembawang Hill Food Centre, out of the city for a change. As good Singaporeans, we randomly ordered food from different hawker stalls to share. I brought back a $5 serving of Khoon's Katong Laksa. It's not famous, yet not bad.
Sembawang Hill Food Centre is a relatively small hawker centre with about 40 food stalls.
The kampung style food centre is set near a low density landed residential area, surrounded by greenery and is relatively quiet, especially during off peak hours. Clean, cool and breezy, it is a good place to hang out over coffee and hawker food.
Khoon's Katong Laksa starts at $3 - this is the $5 serving.
White thick bee hoon in a bowl of curry with strips of fish cake, shelled prawns, blood cockles and a spoonful of sambal chili and chopped laksa leaves (daun kesum or Vietnamese coriander).
Of course, the way to eat Katong laksa is to stir the sambal chili and curry leaves thoroughly into the curry.
The white thick bee hoon are cut into short stubby strips and the customary way to eat Katong laksa is to scoop it up with a soup spoon i.e. chopsticks not required.
The curry is moderately creamy, it tasted sweet from coconut milk, savoury spicy from the sambal chili with a bit of aromatics from the laksa leaves. The sweet and savoury flavours are mild and well balanced. The spiciness is even milder and stayed in the background. The shelled and halved prawns and blood cockles added their flavours and textures to the dish. There were a handful of crunchy bean sprouts in the bowl too.
Tony and Karen have been selling Katong laksa for 20 years (since 2000).
Information for you 👌 All the sweet, savoury, spicy flavours are there, relatively mild and well balanced. Spiciness level is low. The coconut milk is rich but not cloying.
