For our regular meet up today, SW suggested So Good Char Chan Tang. SW like the So Good CCT at 111 Somerset and suggested we try their Mid View City outlet as we were in the area. We enjoyed ourselves here and was talking about coming back for another round.
So Good CCT ่ถ้คๅฎค is a large eatery. Simply furnished but air conditioned and comfortable. Chatter is quite loud as char chan tangs should be. We contributed our fair share too ๐
The menu is above the ordering and cashier counter just like at fast food restaurants. There are Hong Kong roasts, dim sum, noodles, congee, pastries and beverages.
Upon payment, you are given a buzzing pager. Collect your food at the kitchen counter when your pager buzzes. Throughout our time at So Good CCT, pagers were beeping here and there all around us ๐
All our food and drinks came to less than $90 altogether. So Good Char Chan Tang collect GST but no service charge. Of the dishes that we had, some we like much, others less so.
This Pork Trotter Noodle is SW's favourite from So Good Char Chan Tang @ 111 Somerset. We all like the rendition by So Good CCT @ Mid View City too.
The pork trotter stewed in nam yue (fermented bean curd) is well infused with layers of mild savoury flavour. The tender and juicy lean meat, fat and skin of the trotter contributed a bit of natural sweetness to the dish.
The egg noodles were soft crunchy and the strands picked up loads of mildly savoury, gooey tacky gelatinous sauce which made every mouthful so slurpy delicious.
This nam yue pork trotter noodle is a must-try, especially if skin and fat don't bother you ๐
I like this carrot cake because it has big soft pieces of juicy sweet radish inside. Embedded bits of dried shrimp and pan searing gave the dish a little savoury and toasty taste.
Of course, we had the obligatory Hong Kong roasts. The siew yuk (sio bak) has the level of savoury salty flavours I like. The meat was tender and fat was juicy. But, the slightly moist, not sufficiently crispy skin made this dish less enjoyable.
The char siew were soft-tender, well infused and enveloped with sugary sweetness balanced with savoury-saltiness and a bit of toastiness from the char outside. Dominated by the taste of sugar and flavourings like a soft meat candy, it was not really my cup of tea.
Siew yuk - no, char siew - no, but we love So Good Char Chan Tang's roast duck (siew ngap).
The duck meat was tender, juicy and well infused with layers of robust savoury flavours. The skin only had a slight crisp but it was saturated with juice and intense rich savoury flavour. Though the golden brown skin wasn't crispy, this is one of the tastiest roast duck that I've had in a while. Must-Try.
Fresh shrimp chee cheong fun - rice roll with peeled shrimps folded inside, served with a splash of savoury soy sauce blend.
The obligatory "phoenix claw". So Good CCT serves a nice rendition of deep fried chicken claws stewed in a savoury fermented bean sauce. Served hot in a steaming basket.
After lunch, we enjoyed ourselves so much that we hung out a bit longer with French toast, polo bao (bun), and milk tea - the quintessential trinity of Hong Kong char chan tangs. So Good CCT's renditions though unremarkable, were still familiar and comforting. The milk tea has only slight tea flavour and fragrance.
Recommended for you ๐ We will be back to So Good Char Chan Tang for their roast duck, nam yue pork trotter noodles and carrot cake as well as try other Hong Kong flavours like soya sauce chicken, beef brisket noodles, congee, steamed eggs and milk etc.
