Looking for way around a
Pondok Ceri Ayam Penyet is a food shack perched slightly above Jalan Kangkar Tebrau partially hidden behind some shrubs just off the Pasir Gudang Highway.
Drive up the slight slope and slot your car right in front of the pondok (shack).
It's a dining hall with rustic, laid back kampung feel. Pondok Ceri Ayam Penyet never closes i.e. it is a 24 hour operation.
Two of us, we ordered a nasi goreng kampung (village fried rice), and an ayam penyet (Indonesian "flattened" fried chicken). The fried rice came first.
We were immediately struck by the nice aroma of "wok hei" from the fried rice. The tasty fried rice had layers of savouriness, a bit of sweetness and toasty "wok hei" flavour (the smell and taste when savoury sauce and starch on the rice surface caramelises). The flavours weren't very robust but they were well balanced. The fried rice grains were loose and separate, and weren't overly greasy.
We like this.
The ayam penyet set consists of a plate of boiled rice, a piece of fried chicken served flattened (penyet in Indonesian), fried tempeh, fried tofu cube, a slice of cucumber and sambal chili.
The fried chicken looked dry but it was still slightly moist inside. The tender meat tasted savoury with a bit of underlying natural chicken flavour.
The fiery sambal chili is as fierce as it looks. Savoury and kick ass spicy hot. It made the fried chicken and everything taste better. Yums.
As we had white rice left over from the ayam penyet set, and spare room in our tummies, we ordered a bowl of mutton soup.
The mutton soup tasted savoury sourish sweet with pronounced mutton gaminess. There were lots of vegetables like celery and onions in the soup. It's like vegetable soup with lots of mutton inside. I like it but perhaps not folks who don't like gamey taste.
The mutton was tender but quite chewy and rather gamey. Overall, I enjoyed the blend of savoury, sour, sweet, gamey flavours.
Information for you 👌 Our favourite thing here was the kampung fried rice. The ayam penyet we liked too. The mutton soup I like but it may be too gamey for some folks. This is a 24 hour pit stop, so the kitchen crew run on shifts - I am not sure of the consistency between shifts. We were here at lunch time. Our total bill came to RM26 (including a teh tarik).
