Karczma Pod Strzecha Zaprasza. Beautiful Poland Tastes Good

Just a tavern restaurant on Expressway 61 which runs northeast from Warsaw to the border with Lithuania. Away from the city (45km north of Warsaw), Karczma Pod Strzecha Zaprasza serves sincere wholesome, tasty traditional Polish food. This was one of the memorable meals during my 5 day trip to Poland.

Traditional sturdy wooden structure with a warm welcoming feel. Karczma Pod Strzecha Zaprasza is a small highway inn with a restaurant.

At the restaurant, there's plenty of wood inside from heavy wood furniture, wooden floors, from roof to walls. The wood exults a homely warmth which complemented the brick fire place.

Rachel had zurek, a vegetable soup with egg and sausage served in a hollowed Polish sour rye bread. Rachel said it was very nice but I don't know how it tastes because she never let me try 😂 Zurek is popular as a hangover soup remedy.

I had Warsaw style flaki (beef tripe soup). I like this savoury beefy broth with short thin slivers of beef tripe boiled till soft.

My main course was stewed beef cheeks with red wine sauce, Silesian dumplings and pickled cucumber salad. Everything quintessentially Polish on this plate 😃

The beef cheek stewed in savoury sweet vegetable and red wine sauce was oh.. so tender with jellied visceral gelatinous tissue and soft fibres saturated with beefy juices. Stewed long and slow, the tasty luscious beef cheeks were not stringy at all but meltingly soft. These were the best pieces of beefy cheeks I've ever had.

Silesian dumplings resemble Hakka Chinese 算盤子 "abacus seeds" but they are made of potato flour instead of yam and rice flour. Like "abacus seeds", tender chewy Silesian dumplings also have dimples which catch the beefy sweet red wine sauce.

The other mains option was Polish potato pancakes with mushroom sauce (which I didn't try).

Hot apple pie with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.

Recommended for you 👍 I love Karczma Pod Strzecha Zaprasza for its tasty renditions of traditional Polish cuisine and warm rustic rural feel. If you are on Expressway 61 around Warsaw, stopping here for a meal here is a must.
