Famous Kuantan Satay • Sate Zul & Satey Warisan Zaiton Marto

Sate Zul is the most famous satay in Kuantan, no question about that. So, it was on our Kuantan visit itinerary.

But, before that, I wanted to try another local favourite first so that I can have a local benchmark.

Local buddies Lawrence and Alex brought us to Satey Zaiton.

Besides the usual beef, lamb and chicken, Satey Zaiton has duck satay which I have never tried before.

At Satey Zaiton, the satay were grilled over a gas griller.

As we were on a whole day food trail since dawn, we only ordered one beef and one duck satay for only me to try. (The rest just indulged my craziness 🙏 Grateful for such buddies.)

I was most curious to try the duck. It was tender, chewy, savoury salty, with taste of spices. There wasn't any duck taste which was masked by spices and seasoning.

The taste of the beef satay was similar to the duck except for a bit of beefiness and the tender chewy texture was slightly different from the duck. Saltiness and taste of spices also dominated the taste profile.

The satay sauce was thick and grainy with coarse soft crushed peanut. Tasted salty, with spices and subtle sweetness.

From Satey Zaiton, we went straight to the famed Sate Zul.

Sate Zul is a large, bright restaurant, with two levels.

The menu. There's chicken, beef, lamb, rabbit, duck, heart, stomach, etc.

At Sate Zul, the satay are grilled over flaming charcoal outside the restaurant.

For comparison, we chose the same duck and beef satay.

At Sate Zul, the cut of duck was tender, chewy, juicy, mildly savoury salty, with taste of spices. There was a subtle duck sweetness. I like this satay.

The beef satay was nice too. Tender, juicy, savoury with mild spices.

The satay sauce was thick and smooth, nutty, savoury with spice and a bit of sweetness.

Have you tried Sate Zul and Satey Zaiton? How do you find them? What are your favourite satay places in Kuantan (or anywhere else)?
