We were exploring old downtown Kuantan around Jalan Besar also known as "Salted Fish Street 咸鱼街" when we stumbled upon Kula Cakes.
At one time, Jalan Besar used to house dozens of salted fish dealers but after the massive fire of 1995, most of the salted fish businesses scattered around Kuantan - nevertheless, older folks still refer to Jalan Besar as 咸鱼街.
After the Jalan Besar fire of 1995, some of the vacated shops were replaced by cafes such as Kula Cakes which set up here in 2012. People are beginning to refer to Jalan Besar as Coffee Street 咖啡街 because of the many hip cafes sprouting up here.
Wandering about Salted Fish Street we chanced upon Kula Cakes. The interior of Kula Cakes is pretty compact, so they manage the queue outside the little shop.
We have heard, read and seen a lot about Kula Cakes on social media. Local boy Lawrence said since we were here already and the queue wasn't too long, we should at least give their signature mango cheese cake a try.
Inside Kula Cakes, we placed our orders and paid at the counter, then waited for our cakes to be ready.
The cakes were baked and prepared at the back of the counter.
Mangoes, mangoes, mangoes, it's all about mangoes at Kula Cakes.
No lah.
Besides their famous signature mango cheese cake, Kula Cakes have other cheese cakes, Pavlovas, peanut butter pies and chocolate cakes.
All seating at Kula Cakes are al fresco, garden style. It's beautiful and a lovely place to chill out.
We were here around 3pm but it felt cool, breezy, and relaxing.
I like this cheeky, creative mural.
We ordered only one piece of mango cheese cake to try - 2024 price, RM9.50 per piece.
It's quite a big slab. Digestive biscuit base, cream cheese, topped with mango sauce.
Sliced a bit off to try.
The cream cheese was frozen, so it felt like ice cream - cold, quite firm. It tasted mildly sweet with a bit of tanginess. The mango sauce added a layer of tangy zesty sweetness. The crumbly digestive biscuit base added its texture and subtle buttery savoury sweet flavours.
So, there you have it. Kuantan's most famous cake shop and their signature mango cheese cake.
Obviously, we need to come back to try more cakes and their beverages.
Thank you Tony for this cool write up for Kula Cakes. We appreciate it very much. Just one tiny detail to amend here. The baking is not done at the shop but at the other adjacent lot to the courtyard. That’s where our office and kitchen are. We look forward to seeing you again soon and hope we could impress you with our other desserts. Until then, take care and stay safe. - Shahir (Customer Delight Manager of Kula Cakes)
