Stumbled upon this very popular fried kicap (soy sauce) chicken rice place within 10 minutes walking distance from CIQ.
Nasi Ayam Kee Chup is in a small humble house just across the road from Persada Johor International Convention Centre.
This is the house. Inconspicuous, low profile but not hidden. I like this type of hyperlocal place and experience.
It's a Grabfood rated 5๐ place - can we trust it? There is only one way to find out and I couldn't wait ๐
The full house and buzz during lunch inside made me excited ๐
The kicap chicken were freshly deep fried hot off the wok of sizzling boiling oil.
The succulent, huge chicken thighs were boiled, then marinated with soy sauce before deep frying and dressed with more soy sauce.
The recipe for this dish is a combination of recipes from owner Fadli Haji Rosli Palie's mother and mother-in-law.
To order, I just pointed to one of the plates of rice with fried chicken (price RM12). Additional chicken thigh RM8.90. Rice RM3.20.
My order arrived within 5 minutes.
I dug right in straightaway.
The meat tender, almost soft, falling off the bone easily. The flavour was savoury salty mostly from kicap (soy sauce) on the skin and a little infused into the meat. Relatively flat savoury salty tasting. There was no sweetness from the marinade, nor from the meat itself.
The sharp spicy hot zesty chilli sauce made the chicken more delicious.
The set came with a big, tightly packed mound of tender, nutty greased rice. Savoury salty flavour with fragrant aroma.
Three types of rice were used, including Thai jasmine rice which are boiled in chicken stock (from cooking the chicken thigh) along with aromatics such as lemongrass, garlic, ginger and shallot, etc.
The rice at Nasi Ayam Kee Chup is better than at many Hainanese chicken rice places in Singapore and Malaysia, including some big names, in my humble opinion.
Inexpensive, no frills, filling, substantial meal, with comforting flavours. I especially love their rice. Add in the hyperlocal atmosphere, this is a possible pit stop for a walk-and-eat day trip in JB.
