Seeing how the simple, little dim sum place was popular with locals, I decided to give it a try.
Kulai is one part of Johor where dim sum is well represented, so we can expect the stalwarts here to be pretty good.
Chop Pun Heong is a 80 year old, fourth generation dim sum shop.
Not a huge menu but most of the traditional dim sum staples were represented.
The dim sum items are all freshly hand made at the shop.
Besides the usual paper menu, they actually have samples in trays which they present to customers. Just point and the kitchen will prepare your order for you. So easy.
马鲛烧卖 Mackerel fish dumpling.
Tender savoury mackerel fish meat paste spiked with gentle heat from chili pepper. Nice.
Chili pepper stuffed with mackerel fish paste, one of my favourite dim sum items.
香辣风爪, of course I must have my chicken claw 🫢 Deep fried then stewed with savoury sauce and chili, steamed before serving. Nice complex blend of soft tender crunchy textures from fat, skin, and tendon.
I am convinced that once initiated, you cannot unlove this delicacy 🫢
韭菜饺 Chive dumplings.
I ordered chive dumplings because I like chives and also wanted to have my quota of daily vegetables. But, the chives were mixed with fresh minced pork.
Makes the chive dumplings doubly delicious 🫢😁
鲜虾猪肠粉 Rice roll with fresh prawn. At first sight looks generic and even a little unappealing with the bits and pieces of fried shallot.
Nothing to see but the skin was soft and smooth, and there were generous amounts of small fresh shrimps inside which bursted with umami sweetness when we bite into them. Nice.
Since the chee cheong fun with shrimp was nice, I added shrimp dumplings 鲜虾饺 🫢
The shrimp dumplings were delicious as expected. But, don't do this lah (break the dumpling and scrutinise it like looking for contraband) - I did this to show you what is inside the dumpling lah, so you don't have to 😬
Fresh ingredients. Well made dim sum. Efficient, friendly service. Comfortable welcoming ambiance. Competitive pricing. Will be back with kaki kaki to enjoy more items. I haven't tried any of the 包 bao (buns) yet 🫢😬
All Pun Heong dim sum are freshly hand made at the shop - we are able to tell the difference compared to factory sourced items (I won't recommend this type of place to you lah).
