I always love Hakka noodles - so simple - egg noodles sauced with lard and soy sauce topped with fried minced pork and eat with wanton soup. So comforting, tasty, filling and affordable.
Stumbled upon Liang Gee or Leong Kei at Pudu's Wei Sek Kai or Glutton Street (the official street name is Jalan Sayur).
See Hakka noodle must eat (partly because I rarely see it in Singapore and it is also not common in JB).
Uncle Liang is from the family that run the famous 90+ year old Chun Kei Hakka Noodle (in a shophouse just 50 paces up from Liang Gee stall along Jalan Sayur). Chun Kei is in the fourth generation now. The young folks running Chun Kei are uncle Liang's nephews, sons of uncle Liang's eldest brother.
I don't know leh....
Food served in these kind of bowls taste better to me 🫢
I ordered a small noodle serving and upsized the wanton soup. Total came to RM15.
Yup, authentic Hakka noodles.
Mound of egg noodle in a ceramic cockerel bowl, sauced with lard and soy sauce,
.... smothered in a soft brown blanket of stir fried and simmered minced pork, dressed with spring onion and blanched greens. No char siew.
I like the texture - relatively weighty, tender with light crunchy spring.
The sauce and fried minced pork provided the lardy savoury flavours. It's relatively mild like at Chun Kei, a little milder than my preference. Not too savoury, not too lardy. Hence, Tow Kee at Seremban Pasar Besar still has my vote.
Looking up from my Hakka noodles, the view from Liang Gee stall. That's TRX tower which was built on the site of the well loved Imbi Market.
Now the wanton soup.
Soup was somewhat mild but the wantons were winners.
They were freshly made, one at a time at the tiny stall.
Slightly bigger than thumb size, velvetly smooth skin, generous ground pork filling, spiked with tee poh (dried sole fish). Tastes umami savoury porcine sweet. It was a good idea to upsize the wanton soup.
Relak one corner.
Morning mission accomplished.
Now go find a place to lim kopi (drink coffee).
