I have long wanted to taste the asam pedas fish at Mak Limah in Batu Pahat since I started my blog 4 years ago. I kept missing this asam pedas fish because I always arrived at the shop at the wrong time. Today, I am so glad that I finally have the chance to taste this legendary asam pedas and oh... man... it exceeded my expectations even though it is heightened by long anticipation.
这峇株巴轄 Mak Limah Asam Pedas 鱼头超好吃. 味道刚好不会太辣. 鱼好新鲜. 价格公道. 一个大红鲷鱼头卖马币26元. 值得吃. Jalan Dato Tay Kim Peow. 八点到三点. 周四五休息.
It's full house at Asam Pedas Mak Limah during lunch time. The shop officially known as "Rasa Idaman Asli" opens from 8:00am to 3:00pm, so it is best to arrive at non peak hours, if possible.
The price list is prominently displayed on the wall. An asam pedas fish head costs RM24 - RM26 depending on size.
Customers mill around the counter collecting their rice, fried omelette, fried vegetables and chicken, and of course Mak Limah's famous asam pedas fish and fish head.
To know how fresh are the Ikan Merah (Red Snapper fish) at Mak Limah, just look at their lively eyes.
The fish and fish heads are cooked right here at the shop while we waited patiently. It takes about 15 minutes to cook a pot of asam pedas fish.

Many people like Mak Limah's asam pedas fish steak and fish tail.
Today, two of us shared this huge asam pedas Ikan Merah fish head (RM26).
The asam pedas broth is marvellous. It is well balanced between slightly robust savoury and spicy with tangy notes. We love it that we can ask for free top ups of asam pedas broth and it is given generously.
The huge fish head came with thick meat around the belly, neck and back. The meaty fish was cooked just right. We can taste the natural ocean fresh sweetness in the tender ivory white juicy flesh.
As usual, we cleaned up the fish head and every tiny shred of gelatin and meat between the bone crevices. We had a hard time resisting a re-order on the spot as we had a back-to-back lunch appointment elsewhere waiting for us.
Our total bill came to RM29.68 including GST.
4-Star (out of 5). For me, Asam Pedas Mak Limah is so good it is worth the 2-hour round trip detour off the North South Expressway. The fish is ocean fresh, the asam pedas broth is delicious and accentuates the fish's natural flavours. The prices are reasonable too. Asam Pedas Mak Limah is a Must Try.
