The homely butter tart is one of Canada's signature desserts. If you are visiting Canada, you must not leave without tasting a butter tart 😄 Any credible list of Toronto's best butter tarts will inevitably include Andrea's Bakery in East Chinatown.

Yes, Andrea's Bakery is in East Chinatown along Gerrard St. East - a rather unlikely place for an artisanal Western bake shop.

Indeed, I had walked past Andrea's Bakery several times before without noticing its somewhat understated shopfront.

Andrea's Bakery is slotted between Chew's Acupuncture & Herbs and Pearl Court Restaurant. Panda Chef occupies the floor above it.

Inconspicuous it might be in the bustle of East Chinatown but there are dozens of references to Andrea's Bakery when I searched the web for the best butter tarts in Toronto.

It's a rather interesting Canadian experience to hear the Cantonese rock anthems of Beyond while browsing the mounds of choy sum and kai lan vegetables, and then step next door into Andrea's Bakery with French ballads playing softly in the background.

Inside Andrea's Bakery's long narrow space, there are a few high back chairs with small wall mounted tables in front. In the middle, there are glass cabinets, espresso machine and service counter. A chandelier hangs above the counter.

Everything on display looked so irresistible 😄

Just behind the seductive looking cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, scones, pies, empanadas and other pastries, staff were busy at work with flour and butter. Everything is freshly made at the shop.

My mission today is to learn about Canada's iconic butter tart 😄 This was my first butter tart 😄

The buttery shell was firm but crumbles easily to the bite. The crust felt and tasted like rich buttery sweet shortbread cookie.

Made with maple syrup, the filling was runny moist but thicker than gooey thick honey. The filling was caramel sweet yet not overly sugary.

I love it so much that I am eager to try Andrea's other tarts which at CND4 (before tax) is good value for money in my opinion.

4-star (out of 5). I wish there are more high quality, budget friendly gems like Andrea's Bakery at where we do Chinese grocery shopping 😄 Andrea's excellent butter tart inspired me to try this Canadian classic in more places.
