Johor Bahru has done it again, setting trends for Malaysia. Whimsy at The Gallery Wine and Dine in JB is taking Western fine dining to the next level to Savour every Flavour, Satisfy Every Sense. We were invited to a preview of Whimsy and enjoyed the amazing, total sensory, beyond fine dining experience very much.

The Gallery Wine and Dine Western Restaurant is one of Johor Bahru's best places for good food, fine spirits and a great time.

When we arrived, we were served a refreshing welcome cocktail while waiting for our Whimsy dinner to start at 8:30pm.

Whimsy is in a specially set up dining room which sits just 10 people. Whimsy uses a set of video projectors, sound system and computer technology to create an augmented reality experience for diners - taking fine dining to a higher level of enjoyment, beyond our tastebuds.

😄 I felt the warmth of a personalised welcome, the moment I sat down 👍

We were immediately served drinks. Throughout our Whimsy dinner, we enjoyed a free flow of mocktails.

Our pretty virtual host Danielle welcome us, and gracefully guided us through the 5-course Whimsy dinner.

Our Mango Kiwi Salsa and Avocado Seafood Cocktail appetiser. The nicely balanced sweet and sour flavours got our saliva flowing.

The dish was composed of air flown fresh fruits like mangoes, kiwi etc and local fresh seafood like prawn, clam, anchovy etc.

While we enjoyed our fruit salsa and seafood cocktail, whales and manta rays fly by silently in a fantasy world where sea creatures enjoy the sun and glide through the air above the clouds.

Danielle appears floating above the clouds to introduce us to our next dish - Sticky Rice with Spicy Tofu.

It's a glutinous rice patty topped with tofu cooked with a savoury sweet spicy blend of whisky dark raisin sauce and chilli prawn paste. The sauce is flamed with Hennessy just before serving for a touch of whisky flavour.

Polka dot mushrooms bloomed, truffles floated in the air and danced with flying whales before our eyes, heralding the arrival of our next delight.

Our first main course.

Grilled Wagyu Rib Eye and Stewed Rack of Lamb.

Beefy Blackmore pure breed full blood wagyu from Australia, char grilled for tender juiciness and smoky flavour.

Oh I love this slow-cooked baby rack of succulent lamb.

The tenderly juicy meat with a bit of visceral fat has natural sweetness and lamb gaminess which I enjoy.

From earthly mushrooms and flying whales, we soon found ourselves surrounded by blue seas alive with colourful corals and fishes.

Seafood is next on the menu, I thought to myself.

My plate of lobster and oyster with seaweed looked like it was floating on flowing clear blue ocean with corals below.

The springy softly crunchy tail meat of the beautifully grilled Scottish Blue lobster tastes buttery and delicately sweet. The claw flesh has a dense rich feel.

Love this.

Creamy rich French Royal Oyster topped with crunchy jelly-like Japanese seaweed.

Dessert was a beautifully presented Apple Tart Tartin.

The chocolate coated sweet caramelised juicy brandied apple served on a buttery biscuit.

All too soon, our whimsical Whimsy journey was complete.

The curtain closer is an integration of modern technology with centuries old tradition. We wrote well wishes on a tablet and our wishes magically appeared on Kongming lanterns 孔明燈 which took them to the heavens to be blessed.

👉 The food from appetiser to mains to dessert were great (as expected of The Gallery Wine & Dine 😄). The 360° cinematic mapping experience was a first for me and I was delighted.

The price for the experience is at a premium:

🍴Early Bird: RM499/pax (limited)
🍴Normal: RM599/pax
🍴Birthday Special: RM299/pax.

Whimsy is an option to consider to celebrate that Special Day in a memorable way like no other.

Disclosure: Thank you Sean for your hospitality.

I firmly believe that taste is subjective and so, warmly welcome differing viewpoints as it makes this blog better :-D But, I disapprove negative comments that are anonymous or hide behind fake identities. I feel that that is unethical in the same way as speaking ill of others behind their backs. I look forward to all your comments :-D Thank you. (Date: 18 Dec 2015)
