Heard a lot of good things about Village Park nasi lemak in Uptown Damansara (Petaling Jaya) near Kuala Lumpur, the capital of nasi lemak and Malaysia.
Arriving in KL city from the airport, I checked into the hotel, dropped my bags and came straight to Village Park with my KL buddy William. Still, we were here an hour before closing time and most of the side dishes were already cleaned out 😅
No issue, as William said we are here only for the nasi lemak rice, sambal chili and top selling signature spicy fried chicken leg (ayam goreng berempah).
One hour to closing time on a Sunday afternoon, Village Park was full house and customers were still streaming in (even as we were leaving after our meal).
Stacks of nasi lemak with a splash of fiery looking sambal chili with some fried dried anchovies and peanuts waiting for a piece of deep fried chicken to complete the signature dish.
The furious action at the frying station looked frenetic but they had everything under control 😄
Service was quick and efficient - we got our nasi lemak in about 10 - 15 minutes despite the over capacity crowd.
This was my first Village Park nasi lemak. William is a regular here - it's his favourite nasi lemak joint.
The freshly fried chicken leg was big, shatteringly crispy outside and warm juicy sweet inside. The crispy outside is coated with thin spiced batter which is flavoursome and has a subtle spice aroma.
Perhaps because it was near closing time, I tasted a bit of slightly overused oil in the batter. But, overall it was still an excellent ayam goreng berempah. I especially like it that the chicken leg was thick, meaty and juicy.
The sambal chili was savoury sweet and mildly spicy with an underlying anchovy umami taste. The aromatic rice though soft, was fluffy, loose and infused with coconut milk sweetness with pandan leaf and ginger aroma.
We can have additional sambal chili at RM0.80 (if I remember the price correctly). Additional bits of fried crisp batter that fall off the chicken are free of charge and one of the trademark allures of Village Park nasi lemak.
My first Milo dinosaur which William recommended. Quite nice actually.
👉 The local favourite nasi lemak joint in the nasi lemak capital of the world. To me, the winner is the well flavoured fat spiced chicken thigh.
