I was invited to lunch at Qing Palace Chinese Restaurant 满殿中菜馆 in Pulai Springs Resort. Qing Palace highlights Szechuan cuisine and also features Chinese dishes with local touches. Qing Palace uses no pork or lard in its extensive menu.

Pulai Springs Resort has two of the most beautiful and popular golf courses in Johor. There's the Pulai Course (18-holes golf course) designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr and Melana Course (9-holes golf course) by Peter Dalkeith Scott. Both USGA standard golf courses feature memorable signature holes amidst varied terrain and water challenges.

Pulai Springs Resort is ranked one of the World’s Top 50 Golf Resorts in “The Finest Golf Resorts of the World Collection 1999 & 2000” by a society of the world’s most distinguished clubs based in golfers' Mecca, St. Andrews, Scotland.

The foyer of the grand resort Club House where Qing Palace 满殿中菜馆 is located, reminds me of those majestic forts of ancient China. On the walls are murals with Southeast Asian motifs depicting local culture and everyday life.

Pulai Springs Resort won the prestigious FIABCI Prix d’Excellence Award 2000 for World’s Best Leisure Resort Development. The FIABCI Awards is the Academy Awards in the world of real estate development.

From 1999 to 2015, Malaysia Tatler magazine awarded Qing Palace their annual Malaysia's Best Restaurants Award.

I was very impressed with the interior of Qing Palace. It's not large (seats 200 people) but it is one of the most beautiful Chinese restaurants I have seen.

Lots of rich dark heavy hardwood traditional Chinese furnishings. Thick dark plush carpet. Large round tables draped in heavy thick gold luxurious table linen. Large windows let sun light gently bathe the cosy room.

We had our lunch in one of the private rooms.

Four of us shared this sumptuous spread.

We started with Szechuan Hot & Sour Soup (small serving RM30++). Slivers of crunchy wood ear fungus, bamboo shoot, chopped spring onion and soft tofu in a starch thicken gooey soup. Don't worry, it is not too spicy at all 😄

Camphor Tea Smoked Duck (small serving RM 55++ for 2 to 4 pax). The meat is lean, tender, and there is no fat or duck gaminess to worry about. (Though, personally I love fat and gamey tasting ducks 😂)

Sesame Chicken (small serving RM26++). Battered deep fried chicken nuggets wrapped in a sticky sweet savoury sauce. A child pleaser.

Indonesian Curry Fish (Garoupa).

The fish is sold at market price which was RM17 per 100 grams on the day of our visit. The fish we ate weighed 1 kilo. Lots of meat for RM170++.

The meaty fish is fried to a crisp outside while inside the white meat is tender. The curry is mild and so is suitable even for curry novices.

Fried French Beans with Minced Chicken (small serving RM25++). The fresh French bean were fried to a nice crisp outside with crunch and sweet natural juices intact.

Fried Cuttlefish with Nyonya Sauce (RM 35++). Squid with mildly sweet sourish sauce slathered on fried beaten egg served sizzling on a hot cast iron plate. Long beans add crunch to the dish.

👉 Qing Palace 满殿中菜馆 boasts impeccable classy ambiance. The menu is wide ranging from Szechuan to local Chinese. The food is reasonably priced and there are also regular promotions. The flavours are mild and thus appeal to a wide audience. No pork or lard is used in the dishes. A good place for all communities to experience Chinese cuisine in a beautiful classical Chinese setting.

Disclosure: Please note that this was an invited tasting.
