Muar Glutton Street Food Stalls, Johor 麻坡贪吃街

Muar Glutton Street 麻坡贪吃街 in Muar, Johor, Malaysia

Back at Muar Glutton Street 麻坡贪吃街 after 6 years (my last visit was in 2012). Not much have changed since then - almost all the same food stalls are there, many familiar faces and some new faces.

Muar Glutton Street is a 100 metre stretch along Jalan Haji Abu with Jalan Meriam at the northern end and Jalan Ali in the south. (Hence, it is also referred to as Food Street Jalan Haji Abu.)

There are some two dozen food stalls at Muar Glutton Street. They open for business at different times of the day and have different off days. Let's take a walk with me down Jalan Haji Abu. (The street is open to cars and motorbikes, so do look out.)

Looking down Muar Glutton Street from the intersection with Jalan Meriam. That's the entire food street - all in one sweep of the eye.

Let's take a walk down Muar Glutton Street.

亚九美味沙爹 Ah Kaw Satay selling chicken and pork satay is one of the stalwarts of Muar Glutton Street.

Ah Kaw has the usual chicken and pork meat satays as well as pork intestine satay. Taste is sweet savoury, leaning on the sweet side. Texture is soft tender, the intestines were especially soft. The peanut sauce was sweet with a bit of nuttiness and mild taste of spices.

I like Ah Choy Wan Tan Mee 亚才云吞面.

Ah Choy's wanton mee is the "red" type with quite robust savoury sweet spicy flavours. I like Ah Choy's egg noodles as they were thick, heavy and have a nice QQ texture and subtle eggy taste.

The fried oyster omelette stall is probably the most famous stall at Muar Glutton Street. Unfortunately, the stall was on their day off during our 2018 visit. (This picture was taken in 2012.) Locals assured us that the orh chien stall is still the Must Try on this street.

Meat was a little chewy, taste was savoury salty with a bit of underlying sweetness.

This is Muar, so naturally there are otak otak stalls at Muar Glutton Street. We didn't try any here this round but went to Cheng Boi to take some back to Singapore.

Fried carrot cake near the intersection with Jalan Ali.

I like the old school nostalgic newspaper wrap. I also like it that the carrot cake was tenderly soft but the savoury flavour was rather mild and a little flat.

There are a couple of traditional herbal tea stalls at Muar Glutton Street. I think it is a good idea to take a cup of heat reliving herbal tea to cope with travelling in Malaysia's humid heat.

The Muar You Tiao stall at the intersection of Jalan Haji Abu and Jalan Ali is one of my favourites at Muar Glutton Street.

The dough are freshly kneaded and fried at the food truck. The hot off the fryer you tiao pieces have the crispness and balance of savoury sweet flavours which I like. I recommend the pisang goreng (fried banana fritter) and ham cheem pang (fried bun with red bean paste filling).

Information for you 👉 Muar Glutton Street is like a hawker centre but stretched along a short street. There are no special stalls here, just stalls selling familiar local hawker fare. But, there are a few nice ones like the you tiao, wanton mee and orh chien stalls. Check it out, if you are in Muar.

I haven't fully explored Muar Glutton Street. Far from it. Please recommend me good food to eat on this famous food street 😋

Muar's famous Glutton Street or Tam Chiak 贪吃 street popular with locals and tourists alike is located along a 100 metre stretch of Jalan Haji Abu, starting from the junction with Jalan Meriam at one end to Jalan Ali at the other end.

Muar Satay

As you make your way towards the other end of Glutton Street, you will see this satay stall famous for its pork satay.

Muar is famous for its otak otak. This is one of the couple of otak otak stalls along Glutton Street.

They say that a trip to Muar is incomplete without savouring Muar's famous otak otak. We did the obligatory and they were indeed very good. Flavourful curry spices, coconut milk and packed with tender, juicy fresh minced fish.

This is the well known O Chien stall.

The oysters were fresh and juicy though they were not the extra large kind. This O Chien is the eggy, softer type, unlike the type with the crispy crust which is common in Singapore.

Muar Wanton Noodles

The wanton noodle stall is popular for their tasty fresh shrimp wantons or sui kaw. We enjoyed their crunchy noodles in tangy and spicy sauce too.

The fried fritters or you tiao stall on wheels. Customers can have fun, trying their hands at frying their own dough, if they like.
