Kway Teow Kia in Johor JB Setia Indah You Xiang Coffee Shop 顺利老劉果条仔

Kway teow kia 果条仔 is a popular staple in Johor Bahru JB which locals eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper ;-D Kway teow kia stalls can be found in every corner of JB, just like the way we can find chicken rice stalls everywhere in Singapore.

We were food hunting in Setia Indah when 顺利老劉果条仔 caught our eyes. I like to check out small stalls that have a steady stream of local regulars. (顺利老劉果条仔 has no English name but it is literally translated "Soon Lee Old Mr. Liu Kway Teow Kia").

We ordered a plate of different kinds of intestines, skin and tongue, all heaped in a pile.

The pork innards were cut and sliced into small bites and thin slices.

They don't look very pretty, but they have excellent soft bouncy bite and nice herbal flavours with light natural sweetness. The pieces were all clean tasting and very well prepared.

The innards were bathed in light herbal braising sauce and drizzled with garlic oil as well as pork lard. There were bits of fried garlic and lard crackles in the plate of innards. The combination of garlic and lard gave the kway teow kia a nice layered aroma and flavour.

We like this kway teow kia so much that we ordered additional intestines and pig snort ;-p  (This was the second food stall stop for our food trail this morning.)

顺利老劉's broth is the medium bodied, gently herbal kind. The broth's flavours were light and well balanced, and it was not greasy.

The kia teow noodles were generic and relatively thick, but they were slurpy smooth and tender. They also sponged up the herbal braising sauce well.

The homemade chili sauce was tangy, sweet, salty and spicy. I didn't use the chili much as I like to taste the pork innards' natural flavours.

After our meal, we took the chance to speak a while with the busy but friendly stall holder, Mr. Liu.

Mr. Liu was working at his master's kway teow kia stall for many years before he set up his own stall about 10 years ago. Mr. Liu's master (who is also a Mr. Liu) has retired. Mr. Liu's master allowed him to carry on the 老劉 (Old Mr. Liu) brand.
