Warung Mahmoodiah Nasi Lemak, Soto & Lontong Breakfast Johor Bahru

Coming back to Warung Mahmoodiah after two years, I am glad that the street side stall is still as popular as ever (perhaps even more popular now).

Warung Mahmoodiah was busy this bright Monday morning with a constant flow of customers from the offices nearby.

I love the kampung ambiance at this place :-D

The staff are all always very friendly.

"Warung Mahmoodiah" is not the stall's real name. When I asked the staff here what is the name of the stall, they were puzzled and paused awhile before responding "ah yes", pointing to the road sign "Jalan Mahmoodiah" outside. So we shall call this "Warung Mahmoodiah", I suggested, and we all laughed.

Located behind the Johor Bahru Hokkien Association (large yellow building), there is plenty of parking space behind the stall.

The extensive drinks menu and price list is prominently displayed near the counter (2015 prices).

We started with nasi lemak :-D

The starchy rice was stuck together in clumps but it had good coconut milk flavour and aroma.

The chicken's flavoursome outside was fried to a crackly crisp but the flesh was quite dry and bland.

The sambal chili was excellent. Savoury, spicy and sweet (but not sugary). The sambal combined perfectly with the rice and fried chicken.

Being a typical Singaporean, I hurried to order a mee soto when I saw many people eating this. (We can also have soto ayam with bee hoon or lontong.)

The spicy chicken broth, the most important element in soto ayam, was brilliant. The medium bodied broth had the nice aroma and flavours of spices and chicken which were well balanced and gentle.

No wonder this soto ayam is so popular.

The yellow noodles were cooked a little too soft for my liking but the bean sprouts were done perfectly. Crunchy, juicy and naturally sweet - it was lightly blanched, just enough to eliminate any raw green taste. Excellent.

Next time, I shall try soto ayam with bee hoon (rice vermicelli) and lontong (rice cakes).

You can add in as much of the savoury sweet spicy sambal chili as you like. I didn't use this powerful black potion much as I wanted to enjoy the flavoursome chicken broth just by itself.

Seeing that the lontong is also popular here, we added it to our breakfast :-D

The mildly spicy curry was topped with sambal chili, satay sauce and serunding (fried spiced grated coconut pulp).

It's a delicious lontong with layered spiciness from mildly spicy curry blended with nutty spicy satay sauce and hot sambal chili.

The curried vegetables had refreshing juiciness and crunchiness. The rice cakes were particularly memorable because it had the taste and soft-tender texture of real rice (something rare nowadays, especially in Singapore).

I love this lontong.

Our total bill for all the food including teh terik came to RM15.90 (2015 prices).

Warung Mahmoodiah also serves this delicious looking mee curry which I want to try next time :-D
