One of my favourite meals in Johor Bahru is the simple nasi campur (the Malay equivalent of the Chinese "economy rice"). One place I often drop by for this Malay staple is Nasi Campur Kak Sa'adia along Jalan Bakawali 75 as it is just a 5 minutes drive from AEON Jusco Tebrau shopping centre - the largest mall in JB.
Nasi campur, meaning "mixed rice" in Malay consists of a plate of nasi putih (boiled white rice) eaten with small portions of side dishes such as fish, chicken, beef, lamb, vegetables, eggs and so on.
At Nasi Campur Kak Sa'adia, there are about 30 different side dishes which is not untypical of nasi campur stalls found throughout Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, south Thailand and Brunei.
Customers just collect a plate of white rice from the staff and scoop the sides they like from the buffet. Return to your table to enjoy your meal and a staff will come over to tally up the cost of the food (which they will mark on a small slip of white paper and hand it over to you).
The popular curry fish head.
Another popular side - Ikan Kembong coated with turmeric spice and then fried to a slight crisp outside.
This is my usual order at Nasi Campur Kak Sa'adia - rice with a fried catfish, curried greens, stir fried bitter gourd and a dollop of sambal chili. (That little slip of white paper is the price, RM7.30.)
All the food at Kak Sa'adia are freshly cooked at the stall like this sambal chili.
The food at Kak Sa'adia is reasonably priced, delicious, though just slightly heavy on salt for my taste buds.
I have been eating at Nasi Campur Kak Sa'adia for 15 years now. It's a family friendly place.
I like it that I can just pull up right beside the stall along Jalan Bakawali 75. It's been like this all these years :-D
